Dover District Council is welcoming major news that Dover Town has been selected as the next area to receive at least £1 million worth of funding from the Big Lottery Fund.
Big Local is helping 150 small urban and rural communities across England to make their areas even better places to live. The programme is funded through a £200m Big Lottery Fund investment and managed by Local Trust.
Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council, said: "It is tremendous news that Dover Town has been chosen to be part of Big Local. This exciting programme empowers residents to come together to take action and make Dover Town a better place to live now and in the future."
The scheme is resident-led and it will be entirely up to people living in Dover Town to use the £1 million on things that matter to them, and projects and services that will have the biggest impact on the needs of the local community. This could include initiatives from starting up social enterprises and addressing unemployment, to tackling local issues or providing more activities and services for people in Dover Town. In addition to funding, residents will receive training and support from Big Local to help them identify priorities and develop a plan for Dover Town.
Cllr Sue Chandler, DDC Cabinet Member for Community, Housing and Youth said: "Big Local will provide a focus for all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations in Dover Town who want to make a positive and lasting difference in the community."
Each Big Local area will receive at least £1m Lottery funding to spend over the next 10 years, enabling residents to identify priorities that matter to them and take positive action.
