Lorry driver jailed for £1.5m drug smuggling attempt

Friday, 18 May 2012
A lorry driver from the Netherlands has been sentenced to 12 years in prison at Canterbury Crown Court after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle approximately six kilos of cocaine and 346 kilos of cannabis into the UK through Dover.

The combined estimated street value of the drugs is £1.5 million.

On 30 June 2011 UK Border Agency officers stopped a Dutch-registered lorry at the inward freight controls at Dover. After questioning the driver, Otto Landman, they searched lorry and its load of frozen chips and found the drugs hidden in purpose-made concealment under the floor of the trailer.

Landman was found guilty by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court on 16 May and was sentenced there the same day.
