A man who was caught riding a stolen bicycle by a police officer on patrol in Dover on 5 October has been ordered to pay compensation and costs.
33-year-old Paul Robert Wright of Folkestone Road, Dover admitted taking the men's mountain bike worth almost £600 from Halfords in Granville Street, Dover.
He rode away from the store without paying and was chased by a member of staff. PC Paul Tutthill, who was on patrol in the town centre, managed to grab him and arrest him.
He was charged with theft and bailed to answer before Folkestone Magistrates on 22 October.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay compensation of £100 and costs of £85.
He was committed to prison for 56 days concurrent with a suspended sentence for 12 months. He must comply with a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement to have treatment for drug dependency for six months; and a Supervision Requirement for nine months to attend appointments with a responsible officer.
