Unknown Warrior monolith unveiled

Monday, 26 November 2012
Pupils from two Dover primary schools were able to meet one of the town's most important figure heads last week.

The children from White Cliffs Primary College and Barton Junior School were invited to the unveiling of the Unknown Warrior monolith at Astor College along with a number of key local figures including MP Charlie Elphicke and the guest of honour, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral Lord Boyce.

Both Dame Vera Lynn and David Cameron also sent in letters of heartfelt support for the memorial project which were read out on the day.

The monolith houses a brightly coloured stained glass window that depicts the stories of three local soldiers during the First World War along with the repatriation of the Unknown Warrior in Dover.

The piece has been on tour around the country at various different museums and exhibitions. However as result of these travels it needed to be lovingly restored by the pupils at Astor College on its return to the area.

During the Lord Warden's speech he made it very clear how important it is for the younger generation to remember those who sacrificed so much in wartime. Speaking about the window's placement at Astor he said: "Now pupils will have the chance to look at this piece and be able to reflect and embody the values expressed by those featured in it."

Once the monolith had been unveiled the primary pupils were able to meet the man himself. They were able to talk to him about their work on the Second World War and he in turn was able to give them some extra information to help them with their studies.
