Dover's RNLI Lifeboat 'City Of London II' was called out on Sunday lunchtime to reports that a dog had gone over the White Cliffs between St Margaret's and Kingsdown.
Dover's volunteer lifeboat crew promptly arrived on scene and launched their smaller inflatable Y-Boat and two crew members assisted by Deal Coastguard proceeded with a shoreline search. Unfortunately the dog, a black and white springer spaniel was found not to have survived the fall. The dog was removed by the crew and handed over to Coastguard officers at St Margaret's Bay.
Dover Lifeboat crew member, Steve Ladner said: "This highlights that dog owners really must keep their dogs on leads when walking on the cliffs. It only takes a second for a dog to catch sight of a rabbit or a bird and before you know it they can be over the edge resulting in the tragic loss of a much loved pet."
