New ways of bringing jobs and prosperity to Dover are being explored by the Labour Party.
A Policy Review is underway that looks at the economic challenges and opportunities in Dover and other seaside towns, including ways to minimise crime, anti-social behaviour and problem drinking so that clubs and pubs can help bring a thriving but safe night-time economy.
Clair Hawkins, Labour's General Election candidate for Dover & Deal, is supporting the review which will also examine how town centres can be rejuvenated and how empty shops can be put to use.
Clair said: "This comes at an important time for business in the area. I will be working with local people, local businesses and local councillors to develop an economic plan for Dover & Deal, reflecting its vibrant heritage and even brighter future.
"Dover and Deal can be great places to live and work but there is also so much for visitors to see and do. We need to make sure that message gets out there and more is done to attract people to experience our incredible industrial and military heritage, rich local arts and culture plus the amazing natural beauty of the sea the cliffs and our countryside."
Labour will also look at new ways of working with existing partners including; Visit Britain, the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage and Natural England to devise strategies to increase visitor numbers in seaside towns.
Dan Jarvis MP, Labour's Shadow Culture Minister, launched the Policy Review paper and says the Government has not recognised the unique challenges facing coastal towns.
Dan Jarvis said: "As well as being great places to visit, our seaside towns can be a great place to live and work, but the challenges facing our coastal economies are distinctive. They are towns and communities at the geographic periphery, often with a unique character and heritage to preserve."
