A lorry driver from Croatia has been sentenced to eight years in prison at Canterbury Crown Court after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle approximately two kilos of cocaine, 150 kilos of cannabis resin and 30 kilos of herbal cannabis into the UK.
The combined estimated street value of the drugs is £1.3 million.
On 30 September 2012 Border Force officers stopped a Slovenian-registered lorry at the inward freight controls at Dover. After questioning the driver, Damir Komaromi, the lorry and its load of mixed goods destined for Preston, Lancashire was examined.
Concealed within the pallets making up the load officers found brown boxes containing the drugs.
After a trial lasting five days Komaromi was found guilty by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court today and was sentenced immediately.
Malcolm Bragg, from Border Force said: "This case should serve as a warning to anyone tempted to try to smuggle drugs into the UK. We will catch you and bring you before the courts.
"Our officers work hard to keep illegal drugs and other banned items off the streets of the UK and are on constant alert to catch smugglers at our ports."
