A 62-year-old local man is starting a 10 year prison sentence following a conviction for sexually assaulting two young girls.
Leslie Bates of Reach Road, St Margarets-at-Cliffe pleaded guilty to eleven charges including sexual assault and sexual activity with a child under 13.
He was sentenced to 10 years at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday (31 May 2013) and has been told by the Judge that he will serve at least two thirds of that sentence behind bars.
When he is released from prison he will be forced to sign the Sex Offenders Register and will be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
Both of Bates' victims were under 10-years-old when the offences were committed. The earliest offence was committed in 1979.
Detective Constable Paul Deslandes who investigated the case said: "I would like to thank the victims for their bravery in coming forward. It has been an extremely stressful time for them and I hope that they can now move on with their lives."
