The Port of Dover looked to make a splash at 'The Big Bang Near Me' Skillsfest held at Discover Park in Sandwich this week. The event was the perfect platform for the Port to provide support and advice to young people preparing for the world of work, as part of its Youth Engagement Scheme (YES).
Organised by Education Business Partnership (EBP) Kent, the East Kent Skillsfest was an event to target students from Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 in order to enhance their understanding of the working world and to showcase opportunities within East Kent.
Attended by the Port of Dover Police (PC Martin Dadd, PC Ian Douglas and PC James Bowman), officers were on hand to inform and advise pupils about the Port of Dover's apprenticeship programme as well as its brand new bursary scheme which encourages local school leavers looking to go to university to take up study in a port-related field with a long term view of them gaining employment at Europe's leading ferry port.
Port of Dover Police took along the Port's RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) to give the students some perspective of just one of the many exciting careers at Europe's busiest ferry port.
Supporting around 22,000 jobs, the Port of Dover is a major source of employment, with half of these being in the community of Dover itself. It is through this intrinsic link between the Port and the wider community that the Port works to support, encourage, upskill, inspire and nurture young people through its comprehensive Youth Engagement Scheme (YES).
PC Martin Dadd, Community Police Constable, Port of Dover Police, said: "It was a fantastic event and really well attended, which provided the opportunity to highlight the Port's role, the diversity of jobs and of course its commitment to supporting local young people as they prepare for the world of work and in nurturing the stars of the future in our community."
