Shakespeare Beach survey and beach clean

Tuesday, 24 September 2013
The annual Shakespeare Beach survey and beach clean, which took place on Sunday (22 September 2013), saw an impressive 86 volunteers, including Port of Dover staff and their families, offer their time to give Shakespeare beach a good clean.

The volunteers managed to collect 7,557 pieces of litter, filling 53 bags. All the information was recorded as part of the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beachwatch Big Weekend and will be used to tackle the issue of litter on a national scale. The MCS's work has shown that litter ends up on the coastline from a variety of sources, the most common being littering. When people drop rubbish even in the town centre it gets into river systems and then out into the sea and ends up the our coastline.

Tim Waggott, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, said: "What a fantastic and successful community event! My warmest congratulations to all those who gave up part of their weekend to make a difference for Dover."

Working with the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, the event saw volunteers from the Port's Freight Services Agency provider Motis, Kent County Council, Dover District Council, Scout groups and local residents all coming together for the Port of Dover sponsored clean.

Mr Waggott added: "This shows just what can achieved by working together for the good of the community and by taking pride in caring for one of Dover's natural assets."
