A Canterbury man has been sentenced to five years in prison after he was found guilty of manslaughter following the death of a man in Dover.
Richard Bowler, 35, of Sturry Road, Canterbury, was found guilty by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court earlier today (Thursday, 18 December 2014).
His friend David Connor, 23, was found not guilty.
The court heard how Alun Williams, 48, from Shepherdswell, had arranged to meet the pair at their previous home in East Street, Dover, at approximately 10.30pm on 19 August 2013.
But at 5.54am the following morning Kent Police received a call from Bowler saying Mr Williams had stopped breathing.
Officers attended the property in East Street and found Mr Williams lying on a bed wrapped in cling film. Ambulance staff confirmed he had passed away.
Bowler told officers he, Mr Connor and the victim had arranged to have consensual sex the evening before which involved Mr Williams being wrapped in cling film.
Bowler added he thought Mr Williams had fallen asleep afterwards but later realised he had stopped breathing.
Both Connor and Bowler were arrested at the scene pending further enquiries.
Post mortem results found Mr Williams had died as a result of his body being wrapped up for a prolonged period of time coupled with the use of ketamine and methamphetamine.
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Richard Vickery, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "This is a tragic death of a man well-liked by his colleagues and friends.
"Bowler had a responsibility to look after the welfare of Mr Williams when he entered their home and spent the evening with him. Due to the nature in which he was restrained he should never have left him alone for extended periods of time - but he did.
"I'm pleased the courts have recognised this responsibility and found him guilty of manslaughter. I hope this verdict and sentence goes some way to providing those who were close to Mr Williams some closure after what has been a very difficult time."
