Police issue warning over discounted tickets scam

Friday, 10 October 2014
Kent Police is warning businesses in East Kent to be wary of a fraudster operating in the area.

Reports suggest a man is posing as the director of a ticket company and approaches restaurants, shops, salons and other businesses to enquire about their services.

The man will then offer discounted tickets to staff to thank them and will take payment, promising the tickets will be posted. But the tickets do not arrive.

On 29 September the suspect entered a business in High Street, Dover, and obtained £45 from victims for tickets.

On 3 October, the suspect entered a shop in Ramsgate at 9.30am and obtained £115 for tickets.

A further similar incident was recorded at a restaurant in Margate on 6 October although no money was given.

The suspect is described as between 50 to 60 years old, white, 5'10' tall with black collar-length hair.

Investigating officer, PC Dave Ansley, said: "We have received reports of this scam throughout East Kent, the most recent in Thanet where thankfully the business owner did not fall for it.

"The suspect is very plausible, well-dressed, and reports suggest he even makes calls to assistants to confirm tickets.

"But none of this is true, the tickets do not exist.

"We are urging anyone approached by such a character not to part with any cash but to contact Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting ref SI/ZY/8270/14."
