Parks for People - getting communities involved in major restoration for Kearsney Parks

Monday, 19 January 2015
As part of the £3.3m Heritage Lottery Fund 'Parks for People' project for the Kearsney parks, Dover District Council has welcomed a key new Project Manager, Jon Winder, to develop ideas, involve local communities, and to continue to bring the parks to life.

It was announced in July last year that DDC had been successful in achieving a £3.3m funding commitment from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund. In addition to plans to uncover the rich heritage of Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens, the 'Parks for People' project also provides new opportunities for people to get involved through volunteering, a 'Friends of Kearsney' group, and participating in events and community activities at the parks.

A new website has been launched promoting Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens, and inviting people to share their memories of the parks. As well as details of the planned restoration of the Kearsney parks, the website also provides an insight into their history, and information on visiting.

Jon Winder, the new Project Manager, said: "Generations of local people have grown up enjoying Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens. We want to capture this important history, and to continue to involve the local community in developing these amazing parks. We are looking to set up a 'Friends of Kearsney' group, and will be arranging events, and would love to hear from anybody who wants to get involved."
