Dover District Council's Cabinet has confirmed the mix of leisure and sporting facilities for the new Dover District Leisure Centre at Whitfield following a special meeting held today (15 December 2016). The plans do not include a spa but the building's design is being future-proofed to accommodate the potential for further expansion of the centre and its facilities.
One of the reasons the Whitfield site was chosen was because it has the space to grow the facility in the future. None of the other sites considered offered room for expansion.
The Cabinet also authorised the Council's Director of Environment and Corporate Assets to proceed with a planning application for the £26m new leisure centre which is expected to be submitted in March 2017.
Dover District Council is currently procuring a contractor for the pre-construction phase and an announcement of the preferred contractor will be made in the New Year.
Facilities at the new centre will include a county-standard competition 8-lane pool with spectator seating for 250 people, learner pool with moveable floor, 4-court sports hall, squash courts, multi-function room, gym, fitness studios, clip ‘n’ climb wall, and a café. Externally there will be 3G artificial pitches for five-a-side football, free car parking and landscaping.
