Dover good causes receive cash boost

Tuesday, 2 August 2016
Five charities have received a cash boost from the Kent Police Property Fund.

The money, which comes from the sale of items that have been seized during police operations, was given to the good causes at a presentation held on Friday, 8 July 2016.

The causes were nominated by officers and police staff to receive donations of up to £500, and all provide support for the Dover community.

Acting Chief Inspector for Dover Guy Thompson said: "It's brilliant to meet those whose community spirit and hard work helps to build a bright future for Dover, and I’m pleased to be able to present a donation to them. I hope the money will be beneficial towards their projects.

Organisations to benefit this time include:

  • Dover District Volunteer Centre
The centre promotes volunteering through recruiting, placing, supporting and helping volunteers in the area. The money will go towards promotional materials to support the opportunities and work carried out for 16 to 24-year-olds.

  • Friends of Kingsdown Play Park
A charity formed by local parents with the aim of building a new play park for Kingsdown on the site of the existing park. It would include new children’s play equipment, extra seating areas and outdoor gym equipment for all ages. Improvements would also be made to accessibility. The money will go towards a piece of play equipment for children aged under five to enjoy in the park.

  • Deal Memorial Bandstand Trust
Built as a memorial to 11 Royal Marine musicians killed by an IRA bomb in Deal in 1989, the bandstand puts on free concerts to the public between May and September each year. The money would go towards the cost of organising the concerts.

  • Dover Stroke Club
The club, based at the Ark Christian Centre in Tower Hamlets, meets every other Thursday and provides support for those who have suffered a stroke. It helps to restore confidence and an opportunity for those to meet others who have experienced the same. The money will go towards arranging group day trips away, hiring of specialised transport and additional costs within the group.

  • Cordomus
The charity arranges contact between broken families to make sure children stay in contact with parents and grandparents. The money would be used to buy art materials for the art tables used by the visiting children at the contact point. It would also go towards setting up a new book corner, complete with book racks and beanbags.
