Students from the Sir Roger Manwood School celebrate their fantastic achievement and proudly hold their Certificates aloft.
The Refectory at Dover College was packed to the rafters for the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh Awards on Friday night. It was a fascinating evening with music for delight and delictation supplied by the Dover Grammar School for Girls Band, with singing from the Dover College Madrigals. Unfortunately Lord Sandy Bruce-Lockhart OBE, who was scheduled to present the awards, could not attend, but the baton was kindly taken up by Nigel Baker (Head of Kent Youth Service) and long time Duke of Edinburgh supporter.
I was completely taken aback by the outstanding number of students, there were 181 in all! which roughly amounts to 2000 hours of Voluntary Service to the Community.
The students who received their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards from the White Cliffs Panel came from the following schools & College's...
Duke of York's Royal Military School,
Ripplevale School,
Dover Open Award Centre,
Dover College,
Dover Grammar School for Girls,
Sir Roger Manwoods School,
Walmer Science College and
Dover Explorer Scouts.
Another fact that came to light is that with 13 local panels across the county, and with over 3,300 students taking part, Kent is the 2nd highest in the country, in effect the world! KCC is the main sponsor donating around £200,000 per annum. So well done to them. The support from the volunteers who give their time and help for free is admirable. Well Done!
