5 December 2010Although the snow was very attractive and very pretty to look at in most cases, and many of our Doverforum Members were out there with their cameras capturing great shots for us all to enjoy, there nevertheless was a downside to all the snowman fun and the toboggan frolics.
This downside was highlighted over the past few days on this website right across the messages, but there was one particular post from long serving member Alan Taylor who brought it all home to us in a big way.
As this frontpage has been so busy with responses to his post, the post itself has slipped onto our second page rather quickly. So I will now reproduce it on here in the editorial to highlight to our elected representatives and the powers that be in Maidstone and Westminster, that our people down here in Dover were left abandoned. Many elderly residents could not leave their homes due to the appalling conditions...they could not get heat, help, or food. The roads were impassable and whole areas were left abandoned without gritting of any kind.
But I will let Alan Taylor's post speak, for it speaks loudest...
"...This morning I rang both DDC & KCC to explain about a small road King Lea Way Aycliffe. I have not moved my car for 3 days and both sides of me I have many people who are disabled and myself.
I wanted to go to the shops to get heating and food but was afraid that if I took car out I would not get back in as this road as quite an incline and we have had no gritters on this estate for those 3 days even buses were not getting up here.
Both DDC & KCC are the most uncaring councils i have ever come across I asked about getting six or ten shovels of grit to spread on this hill and i was willing to go and get it myself. Both Laughed and said you got no chance. The girl on the Switchboard at KCC told me to stop wasting their time and cut me off.
I and at least 3 other people have had heart attacks in the last 4 months and all live on the ropewalk and need to get medicines food and heating.
If this is what you councils call a caring society I would rather be dead than ask you load of hypocrites for any help.
So my wife and I started to clear this road by hand when along came a yellow tractor with a plow he saw we were having a bit of trouble so he stopped and cleared the road. Thank you whoever you are, you allowed sick and vulnerable people to get to the shops for their food.. and as for voting in locals you lot can freeze in hell."
