The Front Page. - Copy 169 ( Abandoned Dover Exhibition)

12 April 2011

Abandoned Dover:

The Prince Albert, that newly revamped Cafe/Bar, a mere stones throw for the Town Hall and the Councill offices, is currently hosting a marvellous exhibition on it's walls. Yes indeed, a marvellous exhibition of intriguing photographs of hidden and forgotten parts of both Dover and the surrounding district. Lots of places are covered in fine photographic style, all pictured by the amiable Greg Mckenzie, from the Moats Bulwark to the St Columba Church to the Casements at Western Heights. I know many of our members and readers will enjoy these pictures, so it really is worthwhile popping along to the Prince Albert to see and enjoy, and note that it is all FREE to you and me. The exhibition is of particular interest to us here on Doverforum as we have had considerable chat and discussion over many years about pictures from some of these locations, although in our case generally it concerned older pictures.

While at the exhibition we also saw some of the collection from Kath Hollingsbee who is one of our valued contributors/members here on Doverforum...which were fascinating. If you have old or unusual pictures bring them along as they are very interested to see all. The Exhibition continues until April 16.

Picture: The picture above marks the Mayor's visit to the Exhibition. From left. Cllr Jan Tranter former Mayor of Dover, Town Sergeant Chris Hobbs-East, new Town Clerk Alison Burton, the Mayor herself Cllr Sue Jones, Forumite Tony Jayms who is one of the sponsors through ModernGent com, photographer extraordinaire Greg Mckenzie, and young Jack, son to the Mayor.

Greg Mckenzie shows Mayor Sue Jones around the Exhibition. There are a great many photographs spread right round the walls, so.. as they say.. something for everyone to enjoy. Greg and Sue pose in picture right beside a small section of pictures.

Picture left shows Steve Davies enthusiastic owner of the Prince Albert Cafe/Bar and also owner as I understand it of the Accommodation Shop, seen here with local author Anthony Lane. Anthony is a maritime writer and photographer and the book he holds aloft in the picture is his very own. It's called Frontline Harbour and is available in local stores, or indeed pop along to the Exhibition and order one there.

The Prince Albert since its change over is doing very well. It serves food all day long from 10am to 9pm seven days a week. Yes that's right , seven days a week. Rather reminiscent of the 'we never close' philosophy which is great for a smaller enterprise, as opposed to the eternal chains.

While at the Exhibition yours truly sampled several glasses of Pinot Grigio and a Prawn Salad light lunch and prices were very reasonable.

And finally, you will be now recognise the peeps in the pix, but what is intriguing here in the shot left is the window. Something not familiar to us here at Doverforum Towers as yours truly hadn't come across one like this before. From the outside you can see all about the Abandoned Dover Exhibition, yet while inside the pub and looking out, you see nothing at all but a plain glass view of the citizenry of Dover ambling by. Fascinating.
