Boost for Local Wildlife.

Port provides site for Dover’s very own nature reserve.

The Port of Dover is providing nearly 90 acres of chalk downland to the Kent Wildlife Trust (KWT) in an exciting new partnership with Kent’s leading conservation charity. Land situated in the Port Zone (Old Park Hill) area of Dover will be managed by the Trust with the aim of creating a nature reserve to be enjoyed by the local community.

Tim Waggott, Director of Finance and Commercial, said; “We’re thrilled that we could release the potential of this site, enabling Kent Wildlife Trust to transform it into a dedicated wildlife habitat for the benefit of the local community. The Port will support the work of KWT as part of a dedicated steering group in overseeing this new project. We hope that the site will become a sanctuary both for the wildlife we wish to attract and for our community within the urban fabric of Dover.”

John Bennett, Chief Executive, Kent Wildlife Trust, said; “We are delighted to be working with the Port of Dover to restore this important area of Chalk Downland. This will be a long and difficult task but the outcome, the return of a rare, beautiful landscape, rich in wildlife, will be a treasure for Dover and its residents.”

Also....GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR EAST KENT HIGHLIGHTS OPPORTUNITY FOR DOVER THROUGH PORT OF DOVER COMMUNITY TRUST.

The Port of Dover has welcomed the announcement by the Government that East Kent’s bid for a £40 million Regional Growth Fund (RGF) has been successful.

Spread across the four districts of Dover, Shepway, Canterbury and Thanet, the fund will support a programme of direct grants for businesses to expand in the area.

The good news comes as the Port of Dover continues to develop its own regeneration plans.

With a combined cash and share value of £30 million and an additional £1 million per year in cash for the first five years, the Port of Dover Community Trust (PDCT) will specifically target the Dover community, covering priorities ranging from business start-up support to skills and education.

Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, said:
“We are delighted that East Kent will be receiving government funding to support its businesses. This complements the significant investment planned for Dover through the PDCT, which will act as a catalyst for regeneration and social and economic improvement.”

The establishment of the PDCT is dependent on Government giving the Port the go ahead for its restructuring proposals in order that it is freed from its constraints and can become a driving force in Dover’s regeneration.

Mr Goldfield added: “if we can get the PDCT up and running quickly, it may be possible for the two funds to support each other through match funding initiatives which, in turn, will result in the value of Dover’s share of the RGF being greatly increased. This could be a win-win for Dover.”
