The Front Page. - Copy 222 (Christmas)

24 December 2011

Twas the night before Christmas and all round the house..nothing was stirring not even a mouse.

But then...in the quiet of the sleeping house.. the grandfather clock struck midnight.. and just as it did a sash window slid gently open, flurries of snow drifted across the room, landing on the leather chairs, landing on the mantelpiece... A figure climbed in carrying a sack. Across the room he went, stepping stealthily in the dead of night, up the creaking stairway, up onto the dark landing.

He opened the bedroom door in silence, and there she was...the child on his list. In the glow of a nightlight he could see her blonde hair cascading over the crisp and even pillow. He took just a moment to gaze on this scene in quiet admiration. Then he pulled from his sack a large silver box with a blue ribbon and placed it on the end of her bed, he followed this with a large silver box with a pink ribbon and placed that on her bed too.

Then he withdrew slowly, made his way down the creaking stairs and into the leatherised lounge. He spotted the glass of sherry on the mantelpiece and as it was a cold night, drank it all down in one determined go. This made his nose even redder than it was before.

Then.. out into the cold night again he went... with a cheery chuckle...
