29 August 2012The Paralympics
The world saw another fantastic opening ceremony last night direct and live from London. This time the celebration was for the Paralympics and quite spectacular it was too. First up we saw the umbrella as star feature, not entirely sure why we glorified the humble umbrella but of course it is in its way symbolic of our British idiosynchrasy and it all looked fantastic. This ceremony was more cerebral in many ways, less pop culture than the Olympics, and more scientific in outlook...but it was a night to remember for the sellout crowd of 80,000 spectators in the stadium, and the millions watching on television. The colours were fantastic and as ever the Royal family gathered to add the flourishing touches. It will be a terrific event... huge good luck to all those taking part. PB

Licensee fined for selling alcohol to somebody already drunk!
Licensed retailers in Dover are being warned about the penalty for serving alcohol to people who are already drunk.
Neighbourhood PCSO Tom Tucker-Smythe was on patrol in Dover town centre on 22 August when he saw two men walk out of a shop with alcohol in a bag.
He intervened when he suspected that they had already drunk a large amount and noticed them slurring their words and being unsteady on their feet.
They admitted they were drunk and had bought alcohol from the shop.
PCSO Tucker-Smythe then challenged the owner of the shop and issued him with a £80 fixed penalty notice for breaching section 141 of the Licensing Act.
PC Steve Alexander, Licensing Officer for the Dover District said:
‘During the Summer there has been information received that a number of the local retail shops have been selling alcohol to people that are already drunk. This is an offence under The Licensing Act and will be dealt with robustly if proven. This could result in a review and an application to revoke the Licence, and as a result, that premises would not be allowed to sell any alcohol in the future.’

Charities working with young people in the Dover and Deal area...
have been presented with cheques for £400 each by Kent Police....more below...
The money comes from the Kent Police Property Fund and Chief Inspector Darren Mullins handed a cheque to Jane Sharp of CorDomus to help fund its child contact centre. See Picture Left. The two-year-old charity, based in Deal, helps families in crisis following marriage breakdowns and separation. The contact centre offers sessions especially for children after their parents split up.
The new minibus fund for the Dover Sea Cadets will be helped by the cheque handed over by Acting Chief Inspector Daren O’Malley to Cadet Chris Geoghegan...see picture above right.
The Kent Police property fund is generated from the sale, at auction, of unclaimed lost property and items seized in police operations. The proceeds raised at these auctions are then presented to local charitable groups that work for the good of the local community.
