Merchant Navy Day Service and Wreath Laying 2012...
A very moving ceremony was held by the memorial statue on the seafront early monday morning to mark Merchant Navy Day. It was very well attended, with representatives coming from far and wide, some to lay wreaths in remembrance and some just to take part solemnly. The Rev David Ridley carried out the service in his usual reverential style, there were hymns during the service and words read by the Chairman of Dover District Council Cllr Sue Nicholas and founder of the Merchant Navy Memorial Fund Don Hunter.
"oh hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea"
We will have a full spread of pictures in due course so please watch for those. There we are above...PB
Vulcan Bomber over Dover Sunday 5.30pm...
What is it they say...stay in one place long enough and eventually in time the whole world will pass by your door. Yesterday the peaceful nature of a quiet late sunday afternoon was shattered when this great beast shown above and left came scorching across the harbour. It came suddenly from the west, entirely unannounced which is mightily unfavourable for picture taking, and with a whooosh and a roar its thundering magnificence crossed the harbour with some style. Yes it's the legendary V-Bomber. It was returning, as I understand it, from an air display at Shoreham in Sussex. It is reported to be the only Vulcan still flying. And Doverforum captured its moment over Dover!
