30 April 2011 Election Fever:
Meridian News carried an excellent feature on TV tuesday night on the hard fought Election here in Dover and Deal. The full piece was shown on the 6pm show with a cropped version at 10.30 that night. It featured some of our well known local faces, first up being our tip top Forumite Paul Watkins, who of course also happens to be the Conservative leader of DDC. Paul was looking fresh, energetic, summery, see left, as he nipped from door to door delivering his leaflets. He had a full team with him too as he prowled the leafy suburbs, so the Conservatives were/are definitely putting in the groundwork.
"Labour are worried" said Paul "that's why they are bringing in all their big guns!"
And true enough Labour have indeed wheeled in some big guns hereabouts. Ed Miliband himself came, as did Gordon Marsden shadow Minister for Education, and with an expected visit from another Shadow Minister John Healy also scheduled, and there were other Westminster high flyers too ...it is certainly the case that high octane Labour firepower have attended bigtime.
Paul Watkins went on...
"Labour locally are just like their national counterparts on finance. Last time Labour were in here in Dover they left us with a £3/4Million black hole."
Gordon Cowan, Leader of the Labour Group was also featured on the programme. That's Gordon on the left below chatting with reporter Victoria Heath (apologies to Victoria as not a good picture of her) Gordon said.." We have led the Dover District Council before and we were very successful while doing it...it is a vital seat for us and we can win again!" Picture on the right below shows national Leader of the Labour Party Ed Miliband visiting Deal a few days back and he believes Labour can win again locally.
Labour Mobilised...
Latest Press Release just in..hot off the wire....
On Spring Bank Holiday Monday the local Labour Party mobilised over forty members to knock on thousands of doors right across the District of Dover and Deal maintaining the momentum of their vigorous campaign to win back the District Council and send a strong message to the Tory led Government that their cuts are hurting but not working – they are too deep and too fast and they are stifling growth and destroying jobs.
The Leader of DDC’s Labour Group, Gordon Cowan said : “Since the Tories got into bed with the Lib Dems last year thousands of new members have joined Labour and our local Party have now welcomed nearly 100 new recruits. In the last few days of the election campaign we’ve been able to turn out large teams of enthusiastic canvassers to help us get Labour’s message across to the electorate and help get Labour candidates elected on to the Council” ENDS
