Happy Carnival Time 2009
Well what a busy exciting day it was in Dover last saturday July4. There were lots of events happening all over town, and even our new controversial screen in Market Sq got a bit of a populist airing as it covered its first significant event...the Wimbledon Final. Out in River amongst the sleepy flowerpots, something was stirring. Gaily garbed people were gathering and trucks aplenty were assembling. There was something of a throbbing rhytmn going on too and excitement was mounting. Yes my friends it was the carnival marchers gathering, flexing their ever-so-nice muscles, before the big lurch forward. Off they set to great applause and as they wound their way down through the Town, were watched by wide-eyed kids everywhere. A good crowd had gathered at Market Sq to greet them with enthusiasm. Market Sq had a little bit of a Fair of its own going, so the Party spirit was in full swing. After the Square they headed inland again to be greeted by the assembled bigwigs at the Town Hall steps. Oh the excitement!
Straight away I have to admit that I wont and dont know who half the people are in the photographs. The gorgeous girl on the left is unknown to me but name or no name its nice to see her. A Miss Euroregion finalist I see...(just in..its Natalie Archibald) next to her is the guest of honour for this years Carnival..Hayley Okines who unfortunately has that premature ageing condition. This group led the Carnival in fine style. Funds were raised throughout the day to help with Hayley's treatment which was a lovely idea. More on that later.
This young girl is Dover's Rosebud, or so someone whispered in my ear, and a fine job she was doing, smiling and waving throughout even when this grizzled oul photographer with the big black camera approached her. Im hoping Mandie will help me out with some of the names when she looks in. ( Rosebud's name is Faith, see Comments below)
More names have now been added below in Comments by Mandie.
Two visting groups of Carnival Queens and Princesses here ... and all having a great and wildly enthusiastic time. Not sure which towns they hail from but all are beautifully turned out for their visit to Dover. Always a treat to see so many taking part.
This is part of the DCAL float and the picture is not quite right as the netting seemed to catch the eye of the camera. Once again I dont know the names but of course recognise the girl in the centre...Miss Dover, Loren Selby. Loren was Miss Dover last year but was brought back out of retirement to do the job again after the latest holder of the title was..ermm ..fired I believe. Loren was very good before and has enough experience to be a good ambassador.
This is Folkestone and a very well done to them as they are all very pretty in pink and white and blue. Very pretty indeed and all girls everywhere love this kind of thing.I speak from experience here!
Ah twas very good to see that excellent man of the community Cllr John Goodwin taking part. John had just jogged all those miles from River handing out leaflets for his Richard Digance night. This picture and all the other pictures henceforth are/were taken by
ColetteB. ColetteB still had the energy left to make it to the Town Hall where by this time I myself had succumbed to the alcoholic refreshment at David Hannent's Party. There will be pictures from that Party in a few days time too .Lots of forumites there so watch out for those. The shot on the right shows the group waiting at the Town Hall. In the centre you can see the jovial Town Clerk himself Mike Webb in white shirt.
Next up we have the Chairman of Dover District Council, Bernard Butcher, who is always on hand as figurehead extraordinaire. Bernard does a good job at these events all around the region. Also in the Picture are Saskia Wadsworth-Smith ,Princess in the Court of Kent, on the left, and on the right Jade Barrett, Queen of the Court of Kent.
Thanks Mandie got that bit of info from your notes below.
The last two shots...on the left Mayor Sue Jones and Mayoress Ronnie Philpott both looking very glamourous as they wait at the Town Hall steps for the arrival of the Carnival. The picture on the right shows David Hannent of PMC in Castle Street making a donation towards Hayley's American treatment as the Carnival team roll by. The Lady receiving the check is none other than Jenn...but although I know her for years I forget her surname...so Jenn let me know!! and you look lovely! Yes of course, its Jenn Sutton. PB
By the way the COLOURFUL Pencester Weekend Coverage can be seen in ALL RECENT FEATURES.
