So, with the blame culture, pointing fingers during the recent unusually cold snowy Winter, with road and rail problems, not forgetting the Eurostar failings, is somebody going to get the blame over all this I wonder?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

It seems to me that many of the posts on the this thread are symptomatic of one of Dover's biggest travails; namely no-one is prepared to take responsibility but is more than happy to apportion blame.
Surely our local authority has an emergency committee and some form of procedure for convening it when emergencies or unusual situations hit the town; presumably there is also a protocol for engaging the Harbour Board, SouthEastern Trains, the emergency services etc. So why has nothing been done to help direct these folks trying to get to or from the docks - frankly there are a number of very reasonably priced sign makers in the town, who for a very small outlay could have produced directional signs. We could have directed the travellers via the town centre to the docks, or laid on more buses or even mobilised council workers to guide people.
But no it is much easier to blame everyone else.
No bloody wonder nothing ever seems to get done in this town.

Can only agree Ross. Simple things, but always neglected. Predictable but nevertheless disappointing.

In fact I spent a fair bit of Sunday afternoon directing people to the docks and making sure they didn't wander down the sea front but crossed at the crossing - if I had had a couple of hundred quid burning a hole in my pocket I would have got signs made up myself.

If I had still been in Dover I would have been ferrying people to the port a pound a go!

Some staggering stories of desperate people trying to get home on TV this morning - 50 strangers stranded in Rome clubbing together to hire a coach to get them back to Calais, and one Indian guy hiring a taxi to drive him from Barcelona to Calais. A snippet at 1,400 Euros!

Jacqui! I went today to pay the rent, and felt sorry!
There are travel problems globally because of the volcanic dust disruption, so let's not be too hard on Dover eh?

What, you mean that global volcanic ash debris isn't DDC's fault after all? Well, it must Gordon Brown's fault, then.

But Howard, even if they went to Iceland to the Vulcano, they'd either get frozen or frizzled!

Nice to see a bit more tourism in Dover due to the planes being stopped, but if you think about it, what is there that the tourists can do over here except for a visit to the castle or the museum and maybe a bit of shopping.
No wonder why anyone could not drive through Dover, because all the people waiting are sitting in their cars with nothing to do.
If they are foreign its not as if they can see a film at our cinema ?
haha unless of course they are wise and know alot of English
Most tourists that come from Europe will come visit bigger places like Canterbury because there is more to do and see.
But how can we change that dynamic Josh?
Hey there sid
Firstly bring some more activities to do in dover e.g ice skating, bowling.
And secondly update the image of Dover
From my view of Dover as a teenager i think it looks very rundown.
To me I think Folkestone (because of its recent regeneration in the town) or Canterbury is a better place to go with friends. In dover we are always walking around doing nothing.
Days off. Fancy sailing over to Boulogne. How much should I charge to bring people back? Supply and demand
is making it look good!!!

that is very socially conscious of you bob.
Josh, we've talked for years about ice skating and bowling for this town, but while our politicos talked, Canterbury's made it happen. That pattern repeats itself too often to be a coincidence.
As for socialising and more and interesting things to do, I share your outlook and frequently trip to Canterbury a city with energy and get up and go. However, they could do with someone running their transport planning department because they haven't got a clue. Otherwise, a great place to mix with friends.
And, if it helps, to me as an old grouse, Dover looks very rundown.
