17:1688588Yes, an interesting picture, Vic, no I wouldn't like to live under the cliffs !! Families have suffered through cliff falls, notably the Poole family.

10:2688760There's a bit of a glitch in the link there Nigel
http://www.dover-kent.com/Villages/1Pubs-list-villages.html
That brings me back to what was mentioned in a few postings on the front page, there is a planning application being decided at DDC tonight to build four houses on the car park of The Hope in Lydden.
We had 25 residents turn up at the site meeting on Tuesday to voice concerns about the threat to our local. Unfortunately planning permission to demolish the major part of the pub, reducing the area from 250 to 97 square metres to improve the sightline for vehicles leaving the the new estate, has already been approved.
Here is the link on the website Nigel mentioned, the bit to be demolished is the bit with the Mackeson sign on the side in the snow picture, described as a side extension in the planning notice but actually the main bar and probably at least 200 years old. It's a terrible pun but we don't hold out much hope!

10:4688761Barry - no I'm afraid I don't have the report of the 1872 cliff fall near the Albion, nor the exact date.
If we had the date it could be looked up at the library as they've got some of the old Dover newspapers on film.

16:5588788Ray, when I read about demolition of the extension I thought you meant the small area right on the end by the telegraph pole that was built in 1930 according to the link. Do you think DDC realises what they have granted permission for. If the Hope is listed it would mean part of a listed building is being knocked down which seems wrong to me.

17:0288789Jan, that's what most of us regulars thought too so didn't object. The details were there in the documentation of the planning application so hopefully they read those, but took the decision without a site visit.
Good to see positive news in the locals today about The Bull in Eastry being reinstated as a proper pub not a restaurant - the way things are going it might soon be my local

17:0788790Re that last photo, don't they look smart. Almost to a man (no women allowed?) they're wearing jacket, tie, waistcoat, cap, moustache and a pocket hanky or buttonhole. I only get dressed up like that for weddings.
Though not particularly happy looking.

17:1088794Can a planning permission be overturned on appeal? That's one for the councillors I think.
