Day two of the election campaign and I'm sick of it already.......I suppose it's inevitable that the TV schedules are going to be rearranged so that we can get as much footage of the politicians pressing the flesh in whatever neck of the woods they happen to be in on any given day, that we're going to have to be subjected to Keith & Barry arguing the issues ad nauseam on here, that we're going to have witness three live TV debates (each an hour and a half long) on consecutive Thursdays and that nothing else newsworthy will happen over the next month, so could we reserve this thread for talking about anything - ANYTHING - except politics? Please?
I'll kick off (pardon the pun) with football. Shame to see the Gooners getting stuffed by Barca last night, wasn't it?

Hellooo Andy
Yes indeed its all politics mad at the moment but cheer up the superduper world cup is coming up soon and we can all go for a wallow in that as well. But Barca ,or Barcelona to the unitiated, are a great team at the moment and totally firing on all cylinders with the chap the pundits are saying is the best player in the world..Lionel Messi...and who would argue with that. I believe he got all FOUR goals last night and dumped Arsenal out on their arse-enals.

Even Barca fans are saying without Messi last night Arsenal would have won 1-0. Only 22 years old but brimful of talent that doesn't depend on falling over poleaxed (Ronaldo style) when someone walks past him 10 yards away..

I have to agree with Andy. There should be a health warning on Party Political Boredcasts which will inevitably appear very soon. My biggest gripe isn't so much the quantity but the quality and all the throat-cutting that seems to go on. I want to know what the party policies are not what other party's policies are not.
I still fear that the country is so bored with politics that the turnout for the impending election will be very low. Apathy reigns!!

We've already decided, so we may watch the political broadcasts for interest, and we'll certainly watch election night. I cannot abide bickering, and agree with Phil, that I'd much rather know what policies are, and if parties have critiques, then to hear them in a sensible way.
But fortunately this year we have our Anderson shelter against the bombs and shells of party politics. That's the family; until way after the election we'll be tied up in weddings, an imminent first grandchild, and succour for the revisers (offspring with exams). No politics there!
Anyway, after the continuous coverage of the US presidential, I can't help thinking our election broadcasts here will be as a pleasant stroll along the pier.

In my view its the football we get too much of (and sport generally), there seems to be a neverending diet of irrelevant and totally unimportant rubbish about sport on tv.
I am so glad to have politics take the forefront instead. You have a General Election every 4/5 years with the future at stake with the result affecting everyone so it is only right for it to have this attention. To politicos like me an election like this is the world cup and FA cup rolled into one.
I loathe football and politics makes me very angry. I just hope the people delivering leaflets do not blithely trot along my balcony at 7.30 on a Sunday morning when I am still lying in bed as happened previously. Are you listening Nigel Collor (or his representatives).
And yes, I am in a bad mood.

I dont know where you live Diana but in some blocks of flats you have a limited time period to get inside to deliver and 7.30am is in that time slot, I am thinking of one place in particular.
That shows Nigel's dedication, being out and about delivering at 7.30am on a Sunday morning. I never canvas on Sundays and not before 9am either so early mornings, late evenings (and Sundays) are good for doing deliveries. As explained elsewhere there is a massive challenge in getting all deliveries and canvassing done by a limited number of volunteers and as I said you are damned if you dont and damned if you do. Glad to hear you got your leaflet!

Ido understand where your coming from, but thought you was involved in trying to get VIC elected?
as for footy, there was no real way back for the gunners after that first leg even with the gunners second half performance

i thought that arsenal went into the game with the mental edge, due to being outplayed by barca at home and still coming away level.
when they went one up, i thought that if they held on for 20 minutes or so the home side would get nervous.
thanks to messi, it did not happen.

Yes, I'm supporting Vic. I believe in the right to have our say about EU membership and not have it foisted on me by others without having the good grace to ask me.
However, I don't believe the country has to have election fever rammed down its throat to the exclusion of everything else, and if Barry hates football he has about 8 zillion other threads he can comment on, crowbarring the election in to his hearts content. I'd just like a thread that has no politics in it, that's all.

Vic: despite what you say it did happen!
Actually, the balconies on our flats are private, for public use only in the case of emergency. The leaflets could have been delivered without encroaching on our private space, by going downstairs and out of the front door and into the next block. And there is a big notice on the fire door stating it is not free access.
I think I should be able to lie stark naked (YUK) on my bed at that time on a Sunday without wondering who is going to pass the window.
In the interest of ignoring politics and football - has anyone been watching Prof Brian Cox on the solar system. Mega!!

I have to agree with you, unsolicited mail is an infringement of your privacy and with the advent of radio ,tv and internet why the hell do politicians continue to use this outdated mode of getting their message across? It's spam, spam spam (Marek breaks out into song wearing womens clothing and chasing a lumberjack....)
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

i do not see unsolicited mail or freesheets as an infringement of privacy.
just bits of paper that we can bin if we choose.
if we want live in a democracy rather than a dictatorship, we must accept representations in any form from the politicos.
ANYWAY, Manscum got topped by the Krauts tonight. Luckily Dover's football team just keep winning, but then their supporters actually live in the town where the team plays its home games.
