Howard, it is just the children playing their usual 'mine is bigger than yours' game, sadly some boys never really grow up.

It's a shame that Apathy decreed by politicians in the Cabinet and their Austerity can cause personal resentment among common folk.
Politics is bad for the health! It makes people argue and become bitter.

This thread is becoming awful and goes to show how Apathy towards Osborne's Austerity can rupture civil dialogue.
I doubt anything personal has been posted against Barry, arguments probably stemmed from original criticisms of Gov.'s clueless measures and Barry's occasional political stance in defence of them.
People have a right to express their discontent, though, and also their ideas. This goes as much for Barry as for anyone here. But as no-one on the Forum is the PM or the Chancellor, there isn't any need to become personal, as these two men alone decide every dot and iot of British State policies.
Perhaps with the addition of one or two other Cabinet members, but that's about it.
It was the same in the Blair era. Basically we live in a political dictatorship,
Which is why Apathy looks more likely to win all elections, through no-turnout of the many.
Until Austerity drags us down to Greece's level.
As said previously, local politicians don't decide really anything, it's all dictated from the Cabinet.

"As said previously, local politicians don't decide really anything, it's all dictated from the Cabinet."
Politicians decide who is going to be PM. The PM decides who is in the cabinet. The cabinet decide on policy. And this happens similarly at county and district council levels.
So, yes, politicians do make the decisions, all of them.
Except that the civil service and council officers then decide whether they will implement the decisions........or not.

Peter - your last sentence "Except that the civil service and council officers then decide whether they will implement the decisions........or not".
The Council officers decide how to implement policy, not whether.

We people down the ages.
Apathy is not contagious
it is neither Flu nor Clap
we people down the ages
have had to deal with
all sorts of such like pap
Buck up and be courageous
no need to cower or bend
we people down the ages
have had to deal with
much make-do and mend
All argument victorious
gains insult from a scroat
we people down the ages
may coast along regardless
but we won't forget to Vote

an example of the good lady's work, brings a tear to the eye. now where did i put that bucket?
Today is the beginning
In the years that lie ahead
may you always share the love you have
this day as you are wed
I pray you'll each be one on whom
the other can depend
and may you share not only love,
but be each others friend
some hopes may not be realised
some dreams may not come true
but many of them will I know
to bless the two of you
within the home that you will have
I pray you'll always find
contentment, joy,security
good health and peace of mind.

April is the beginning
a time we each may dread
though we utilise the space we have
we're to be taxed on our spare bed
it is to be the poor on whom
the rich again depend
we may indeed share wide our love
and yet be without a friend
our expectations realised
disaster from the Blue
though many of them know
it is to the Blue they're true
within the home that we now have
the Tory's sure to find
some trinket, toy, security
for us to part with to give them peace of mind

Wow!! lets dip my toes in the water;
1; Alexander, please, local politicians of the two main parties have over the years pushed for more monies collected by local councils to remain with the council rather than going to govt?(even watty and I may agree here!!!!)
2; John, im unsure who's threatening you, but please stay, i welcome your imput even though your soft labour lol
3; There is no doubt unions (a few) got to powerful but maggie didn't solve the problem she turned the tables completely
where we ended up with a victorian style give us a job guv, climate, short term contracts, and im afraid didnt realy hekp
4; We have seen how, since maggies days(and carried on by other govts) the sale of council houses(without rebuilding council
councils)has seen how the housing list grows.
5; Wonder how Liam Fox's announcement on the mouse/govt and what they should now do is correct?
6; Peter and i could also agree that the officers run councils as do the C/Servants in govt
to believe otherwise you are not keeping your eye on the ball.
And I have explained in other threads why this happens.

Keith, the Government is cutting spending on council budgets by an average of 40% over 4 years, starting 2010.
So what have you concluded in paragraph 1 of post 78?
Just a political non-explanation (trying to) prove the contrary of the facts!

two different things here alex, keith is talking about more council tax collected locally being kept locally whilst you are referring to rate support grants from dave and george.
