love watching the birds in my back garden on the bird table - 3 March 2010 17:5642088Had these three chaps hovering around the bird table in the last 30 minutes. I'm not very good at birds unless they are pretty obvious, so am I right in thinking the first is a Dunnock? Sparrow and Thrush being the other two methinks.

The middle one is a chaffinch. The triangular shaped beak gives away any member of the Finch family immediately. Dunnock and Thrush are right, though.True friends stab you in the front. - 3 March 2010 18:4642099Take a look at post 33 again and then post 17.

How could I get that wrong - a bit embarrassing when you have three nature pages! I think I'll stick to deep sea squid in future, I'm better at identifying those than common garden birds.
Are you implying one of my pics is indeed the elusive Night Heron Ian? That would be an excellent spot if true.

He hopped in the food bowl I have for our visiting brood of ring neck doves and I played statues whilst I watched him. He thanked me by flying off to the tree and singing.

Depends on work and the woife I suppose. I love hiding under rocks for a few days at a time.

I know you are probably all sick to death of seeing images of it, so I'll make these the last this year unless I get a really good one.
I think it might be a juvenile Grey Heron - the beak will turn from black to yellow as it gets older. They live for up to 25 years I've read - rather surprised by that.

one of these days i will hang around that area long enough to see one myself.
