Bob Goldfields tenure as Dover Harbour Board Chief Executive has been an economic disaster for the local economy, discuss.
Is this the same Bob Goldfield whose salary last year was £217,000?

Barry that is not so D.H,B is not the resson for the down turn of the town that is down to the councils over the years both reds and blues but mostly down to the blues planning Dept, the Port of DOVER a success and a story of accomplishment the only downside of that is the lost of jobs over the last few years and that should not have happen,if the rest of the town looked like the port does then it would be great, all the blues are are saying that because like the reds, you wish to see it sold off.

Vic - I was making a facetious point that you cannot claim one man has been an economic disaster for Dover.
The reason for Dover's problems are a combination of factors and no, you cannot put the blame on the council either though the planning department (not a political matter) is not innocent.
The geographic position with Canterbury sucking in retail with a much wealthier hinterland is one reason.
One other is the Port not doing anything in support of Dover town with its Charter preventing it from doing so. Perhaps Dover Port has prospered despite the Charter, not because of it.... other ports less advantageously placed prosper and do a lot more to help their associated towns too, after all.
It seem to me that some people are just scared of change and will find reasons to oppose any change.

The Charter is Ok it is the Council,or some members of it that we should be looking at and that might just happen in May.I do not care what partys is running the DDC but we need a new planning dept if the blues can do that it will be for the good of Dover.

Vic please extract head from posterior and smell the coffee.
The charter is not ok it prevents the DHB making any meaningful investment or financial contribution to the town.
As Barry says the planning department is also partially culpable for the travails of the town.
So to is the nature of our geography and our industrial history
40 plus years of ineffectual local councils and petty political bickering between parties also has made a contribution to our problems
As has the lack of a sizeable middle class
and finally so to have the mass of the population that frankly do not give a toss about where they live and contribute to the neglect either through inactivity or even worse through talking the place down

I agree with you Ross from 40years of ineffectual local councils but not anything above that.
