I always thought it did good business mainly the cloths shops ,always seemed to be alot of people off the coaches in there although some of the clothes were very expensive but good quality stuff.Lots of other smaller units in there seemed to come and go all the time.

Last time I went in there I asked if they had an off the peg suit to fit me, the reply came back "If so someone will get the sack".

Hugh was in there at about 3pm today. No indication that it was about to shut its doors then!

Well there you go.
The De Bradelei was of course being set up by DHB just at the same time as DDC were turning down an application to build the incredibly sucessful McArthurGlen Design Outlet at Whitfield which would have been in direct competition with it (Home to 82 international brands at up to 60% less, this retail business is aiming high; their aim is to not only delight the local community with world-class designer goods, but also visitors from London and near Europe - as their publicity puts it). This would have brought hundreds of jobs and hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Dover area.
Instead McArthurGlen went to Ashford.
Yet another example of the lame-brain butchers, bakers and candlestick makers (and remember, Dover's idea of a successful businessman is someone who hasn't quite gone bankrupt recently) who make up our elected members, showed their complete ignorance in understanding what is good for the district, or indeed how 'retail' is changing.
Not that it has anything to do with the above but the Chief Executive of Dover District Council at the time was John Moir who left shortly afterwards to take up a post as a member of Dover Harbour Board.

A shock. The one place you could go to in Dover to choose from a wide range of good clothes at reasonable prices.

Not much left really.
Next you will be telling me that the leisure centre in town is going to close.

Over the past year the traffic, lorries and access to the seafront has rendered DeBradlei unviable. Many of us has seen this coming. The seafront access has been so difficult over the past year that the many coaches from throughout the South East have ceased to come. The reputation of the 'Port' and its travel difficulties have given the message that Dover is a 'no go' area. It is extremely sad to lose this excellent retail centre. It is THE retail centre for many of us with the most amazing fashionable cost effective clothes and shoes that are not of the High Street. Where do I get my beautiful sheets, dresses, shoes now........? Thanks Dover Harbour Board or Port of Dover you have, as a result of the traffic barrier, destroyed one of the best resources that Dover has had since its decline of High Street services. I am, as with many other methinks, totally bereft!
The Dover Harbour Board has an icy finger all over Dover. I have my eyes open to the non-executive members of the Board, the highly paid Dover Harbour Board who rules Dover. To what purpose? its demise.
Cambridge Terrace needs a watchful eye.

I thought that the 'plan' was to connect the retail area at Debradelei with that of the town centre and the St James development via a bridge or some such thing.I have always questioned the long term vision of those that that control and administer this area of the town.I would like to know the justifications if this is a permanent closure and if it is part of a 'vision' that is of benefit to all and not just the select few.

Very true a Captain,Not a Candle stick maker or any of the others you quoted I voted time and time again for Mcarthy Glenn to be based at Whitfield. For some reason or other DHB wields very strong power in Dover and some at DDC are to weak or nieve to see this.
What now..?The bridge was to connect the seafront to the town .A cable car to connect to the Castle. ,and on this note all we need is a bus service which does a circular route connecting the gateway,,Port and the Castle.
We will need a bus to serve DTIZ ,that seems to have gone off the radar.
Time to have less meetings ,a few strong people who know when to say enough is enough.

De Bradelei will be left to rot in the same way as Cambridge Terrace, what next the yacht club?

My prediction is the buildings will be pulled down, all part of DHBs big plan.I would hope if the Leader of DDC is reading these threads he will insist something is done re Cambridge Terrace..No good employing DDC officers if they cannot be used to do something about this.Funny old world if you live in Sandwich or Deal paint your property the wrong colour they soon enforce rules to impose that colour is changed.Doesnt matter if DHB are the big boys or whether it's poor old Mr Blogs the same rules should be used.

Not just the Dover site has closed.

My understanding was that it was the De Bradelei group that had failed - Dover being just one of their outlets - and that this was not a closure of the Dover site alone.
Ah, just seen Karlos' post. Indeed, it is the group, not just Dover.

The Wallwork family created a great number of jobs, such a shame to see this happen. Several years ago they were involved in the consortium that wanted to build a cable car from the Clocktower to the Castle, a spectacular game changer. For reasons unknown, DDC and DHB declined the opportunity, now this is the result.

David do you really think that the ridiculous cable car plan would have made any difference.
