11:2579775You ain't seen nothing yet - at least if the cost of heating goes up you can put on another layer.
Food price inflation is the one to watch! Food prices in October were 4.4% higher than a year earlier, up from 4% in the year to September.
To paraphrase Harold Macmillan 'You never will have it so good'. The bottom line is that we are all looking forward to a reduced standard of living for the foreseeable future. That's what happens after years of spending more than you earn as a country (and in many cases as an individual).

11:3479777You have the freedom to switch suppliers. The last time BG increased their prices my power went down!

12:5679789it always seems to be this time of the year they put up prices, then whenever there is a drop, strangely enough it is at the end of spring.

18:2779851bob is right about food prices, i have noticed that over the past few months, the world grain shortage is not helping.
thankfully there is no v.a.t. on food at present, i heard a suggestion that practically everything should come under the v.a.t. umbrella for simplicity sakes.

18:3679853I would rather have tax on what you spend than on earn any day.

20:2479863I totally disagree Howard. Some ajustments would have to be made but overall the more you spend the more tax you pay. You choose whether to pay tax, I like that idea....
You would have a lower rate on food and power.

00:0980090Save on your gas??
Just received from Scottish & Southern a notice to effect that prices are to rise by9%. Also a pamphlet telling me how to save on my gas bills!! "How bizarre" Surely this has to be a sick joke or are they once again taking the piss knowing there is nothing I can realistically do about it.
One can only hope they and there employees choke on their turkey!!
P.S.
Have already started to save gas, have burnt there leaflet!!

12:1480120They have already started to economise at The Gateway by shutting off the central heating between 22.00 and 06.30 and again between 09.30 and 16.00. So now I am faced with a problem. Do I buy a heater and pay twice for my heating or do I wear even more layers (as I speak I have a t-shirt, sweater, warm pants and furry boots on) or do I take to my bed between 10.30 and and 16.00?
I certainly believe that we are all looking at a decline in our standard of living over the next few years.

14:0580133Gateway management obviously assume everyone is at work or out during the day, which is just plain daft. Everyone should complain and demand a refund to cover their daytime heating bill. What will you do when the weather gets really cold.
I have my heating on all day as it is cheaper to run, my gas bill has gone down since heating the house this way.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

14:1080135i tend to turn it on first thing in the morning and turn off about 9 p.m, i cannot sleep in a warm house.
if we have another winter like the last one it is best to leave the heating on 24 hours, on minimum at night, so that pipes don't burst.

23:1280219'wouldn't work barry, would hit the poor hardest.'
I can do no more than quote the excellent Auberon Waugh from some two decades ago:-
Children of the chronically unemployed in 1993 have colour television, hot water, plenty of food and, usually heat...When I think of the extreme cold of the houses I grew up in, the genuine shortage of food and clothing (and mine was a rich and privileged background), I can see that those who affect to be indignant about the plight of the poor in England are concerned only to find something they are indignant about to demonstrate their own moral superiority.

07:3180233Bob - that certainly sums of so many on the left. It is indeed about making themselves feel good.
