on the itn news last night the over 60s bus pass is to be reviewed.it appears that its costing 1 billion pounds a year to operate.the goverment is looking at making it cheaper to run.as far as i can see there are two end results that spring to mind.1,scrapping it all together or 2,charging a small price for it.the programe allso went on to show david cameron stating that the bus passes where safe under the conservative goverment, this looks like a massive u-turn by the goverment.what do forum members think.
I think we should remind ourselves that firstly this is only a proposal, not policy. Furthermore, as a proposal it is only restating the plan Labour were going to implement, so not really a Condem/Tory cut.
However, whichever party introduces a change that means you get a bus pass WHEN you actually retire, and not before as now, will have made the right and logical decision.
NO party is planning to scrap the bus pass, that was just a figment of a tortured Gordon Brown/Alistair Campbell mind.

The Chancellor has asked departments to come up with a range of cutting options. It is quite valid to consider this one. You can argue it if and when it actually becomes a cut.
Personally I am cheered by the approach.

I think it should go a step further and at the age of 65 everyone who wants a bus pass should apply. It's no use dishing out thousands of passes that are never to be used. The winter fuel allowance should be means tested and payments should not be in cash/cheque etc but by 'energy vouchers' that can be redeemed against any gas/electric/oil company. This would stop grannies spending their dishdosh on their grandkids at Christmas.
People able but out of work for over 6 months should be put into public service work to 'earn' their dole money.
Child allowance should be means tested say over £40k and you don't qualify plus should only be payable to those that have NI contributions for the past 12 months(set your own time limit barryW)
I could go on but have to take Number One son to work...back later

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

the last government was planning to change the age of eligibility for a bus pass to 65 starting from 2015.
it looks like the new government will bring it in 2012, though nothing finalised yet.
i will refain from making my views known as the elderly would hate me.

Speaking as someone with a bus pass I think it is daft that they are given to those under 65.
I also believe that there should be a limit to the number of times a pass can be used in a month. There are some who come into my charity shop who go to places like Canterbury or even Hastings nearly every day of the week, they would not make trips in their car in the same way.

I agree with Jan, the passes should be from 65 only.

Marek, bus passes are not dished out you have to apply. I know people who are entitled but won't apply as it is below them to get on a bus.
Melissa, you may be old one day.
Jan you are a saviour but sadly i find a lot of elderly obnoxious and you are very true it what you have put also as a mum of three young children im sick of having run ins with the elderly on the local buses over the buggys being allowed on they sit there a moan moan moan i turn around and say at lest i pay for the seats

. Also i believe the times should be changed until half nine again as school buses a nitemare as it is without the youth of today and the elderly seat grabbing.
Alec i at least would be grateful that i get such treatment as free travel, shame students and parents of school children dont get such royal treatment.

mel,i can see where you are coming from, but buggys do take up space and block the passage way making it hard to get through evan for the able bodied person.1 or 2 buggies are not to bad but when you get 3 buggies on it fringes health and safety.bus passes can be issued sencably with a 9 am start in which is after the school run.
i agree that 3 is far to many but the abuse i have, as other mums put up with is disgraceful.
also the shopping trolleys get on my pip too, i mean surely thats a safety issue in its self.
