11:0310395Dover District Council Cabinet member, Cllr. Julie Rook has been selected to contest Wolverhampton North East at the next general election.
She needs a swing of 12.5% to get elected, which is quite possible in the current political climate. Julie is one of Dover's political stars and I am sure that everyone, whatever their political allegance, will join me in congratulating her on her selection.

11:2610398On a personal note "Yes well done Julie, a great honour"
On a political note "thats just what Wolverhampton needs is a Tory candidate from the South of England!!!"
I think you are aware of where my allegiances are!.

11:5610402Marek. I am sorry that you had to hit a sour note. I deliberately did not mention Party because even though people are likely to know her allegance I wanted to keep this thread on a personal note. To answer your point. I am quite sure that Wolverhamton would have had local candidates on their selection list and it is a tribute to Julie that she managed to overcome her affliction of being from the south east. The selection would have been carried out by local Party members and they clearly selected the right and best person for the job, on ability. Good for them.

12:1610404Yes good luck to Julie. She is a very likeable person with bags of charisma too. I will see if i can find a picture later when I have a minute. One of the mysteries was why she wasnt selected here...but there we are, water under the bridge.

Apologies for hitting a sour note ,I really am pleased for Julie but my comment was mean't as a general one ie out of towners being shipped in to stand at elections. I agree with PaulB's statement she would have been a great candidate for Dover. We have a taffy representing Dover , a Jock Prime Minister and a German Queen so if we can cope with that I'm sure Wolverhampton can cope with Julie Rook (does this mean she's giving up her job in the butchers....joke...b4 anyone else gets upset).

13:3510410Well done Julie on winning the selection, we know that you do have the ability and drive for it.
I did not think Marek\'s posting had anything to do with party alliegance but was rather a valid statement on general political practice.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

13:4310411Im just testing here for the moment and writing lots of oul garbled rubbish which is probably an improvement on my normal posts. It is great to see so much life coming to fruition here in ...etc etc etc\r\n\r\nLast week when I went out for dinner I came across a pink elephant when coming home. I feel sure therefore that someone spkied my drink. It had to be so...as there are no such things as pink ele[hants so thewre isnt it.\r\n\r\nI only had a bottle and a half\r\n\r\nThis is just a test. Dont pay any attention to it.

13:5710416here, here - I have noticed this and have edited them out...Chris - 'general political practise' is simply to open up selection and to allow the local selection panel to pick the right person for the job. Often that will be a local and often not. It is actually a strength of the system, after all why should a strong candidate, such as Julie, miss out on an opportunity to be a first class elected representative just because she was pipped at the post by another where she lives, it strengthens the candidate pool.
(just happened again, edited!!!)

15:3910422I do agree on Julie being a strong candidate but that does not make it good practice. It takes time to build up good local knowledge in order to effectively represent an area (look at the work Charlie is putting in) and the logistics of running for a constituancy in Wolverhampton while representing a ward in Deal have to cause concern as to which will get the best attention.
This extra punctuation can be a bit distracting here Paul.

16:1210423Yes indeed but I think it is all fixed now...well done to my ace young man at coalface Chris Tutthill.
I am just writing another unnecessary paragraph by way of another test.
Apologies to Julie as we got a bit distracted on her thread. Good luck to her once again.

19:3110438Julie will enjoy the campaign. She is very capable. My experience of fighting Barnsley West in "97" certainly opened my eyes to a different world of politics & I met some great people of all political persuasions, even chased down a cul de sac by an axeman.
She has her feet firmly on the ground.

21:2410443Yep , Howard, Barnsley. One A.Scargill was one of the residents I had to door knock. He lived in a massive bungalow just off the M1, surrounded by fencing & security lights. Great times.
Julie will really get a kick out of it.
