19:1039644CHEWING GUM AND CIGARETTE BUTT BINS
IN DOVER MARKET SQUARE
As part of ongoing work to keep the district clean and tidy for all who live, work and visit here, special cigarette and gum bins have been placed in Dover Market Square. Dover District Council has installed the three double-sided bins as part of its work to continue to improve the local environment, or 'street scene', across the area.
Cllr Collor, Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management said: "We continue to listen to our communities, and following a number of requests, we are very pleased to trial these dedicated cigarette butt and chewing gum bins in Dover Town Centre. We continue to work hard to further improve our street scenes for the future of the district."

19:1239645"We continue to listen to our communities", but not when it comes to public toilets aparently. Cigarette and gum bins, at least 5 years behind Canterbury and elsewhere, but welcome nonetheless.

19:1939648Listens to the community, he really is taking the p... acts like a South American dictator in closingthe loos and then expects thanks for a couple of bins which as Sid correctly says most towns have had for years.

19:2539651probably just reading a prepared statement from the PR dept.
standard practice nowadays.
a bit like the police stuff that comes through the door, along the lines of "you said - we delivered" etc etc.

20:5939661Whatever. If the chewing gum gets shifted, then all is well.
The toilet thing is (hopefully) history. If Cllr Collor can repair some of the damage from a dreadful mistake, then good luck to him. I suspect he has much ground to make up, though.

23:5839680As Business Support Manager, I attended a meeting recently on Town Centre rejuvination and I asked for a 1/4ly chewing gum cleaning schedule and this was agreed by KCC.
I had also asked for litter bins with cigarette-stubbers on the top, but told they were too expensive, glad they found some money.
The Town Centre is very important to everyone - residents, visitors and businesses and as such deserves every effort to smarten it up, whether on the ground with chewing gum and litter, or up above with run-down buildings and everything in between.

You never miss the chance to have a go at Nigel do you. If you dislike the man then fair enough but I for one find it very childish the way you harp on and on every time he does anything.
You're not exactly perfect yourself, even though you may think you are.
Like you I think everyone has a right to a view but your constant sniping about councillor Collor is very tiresome and unnecessary. Try sticking to the subject in hand and leave personal grievances out of your postings.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

11:0339688Great to see the bins.
Now (as I have posted before) there is a need to exercise fines for litter (chewing gum/cigarette ends) and this needs to be done by the "Enforcement" officers (previously Parking officers) as well as the police.
I mentioned how Lincoln cleaned up its City and at least this is a start for Dover. The street scene is so important for the image of our town.

12:2139691Well said Pat, Although I can't see it happening.
Some people are far to stupid to use these facilities or just don't care.
On occasions when down the town I smoke and now and again chew gum but never once have I left anything on the pavement. it either goes in the bin or in a tissue.
Could I be one in a thousand?

12:2239692Pat, you forgot to mention McD's, the litter scourge of every town that has one.

20:3739723As a cigarette smoker I always try to put my butts in a bin or down a drain if there is no bin. Do not just single out smokers, target all people who dump litter, particularly those who dump their fast food wrappers and cartons, or even worse the contents of the same.

I am not segregating cigarette or gum offenders but litter in general and the need to make examples as in Lincoln where they have achieved 5* rating for cleanliness. They name and shame offenders and there is total co-operation with police and the City Council enforcement officers as well as CCTV.
In Dover the police do nothing and there seems no enforcement for litter offences or monitoring by CCTV which the town has.
Yes the Fast Food outlets have a lot to answer for and maybe a "cleaning tax" should be levied on them also shops that sell gum as the gum problem is usually outside these establishments ( Pencester is a splendid example as well as Ladywell).
It is also the need to educate and I wonder what education programe with schools etc the Council have. Perhaps one of the Councillors who read ,and sometimes contribute, can enlighten us.

10:3639745I'm one of the thousand as well Ian, I was brought up to put rubbish in the bin and if there wasn't one to hand, put the rubbish in your pocket and dispose of it later, I have brought up the girls to do same. It really annoys me when mindless morons blatantly throw rubbish in the street even when they are in touching distance of more than one bin

11:2139757Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't someone at DDC remove some litter bins from Dover streets awhile back?
I don't agree with harder enforcement, and I don't care if Dover isn't 5*, in fact I wish they'd turn off and remove some the far too many cctv's in our town.
But, I just get a feeling the educational establishment is letting our country down a bit on the social responsibilty teaching side of things. They aren't getting the message through it seems to me, maybe they aren't giving the message.
Perhaps they need a Forum?

21:1339829Can someone please tell me why chewing gum and butt ends can`t go into conventional bins? And also, were all those Keep Britain Tidy ads from the 60s all a waste of time?

21:2339832Perhaps chewing gum could have an additive put into it Howard like everything else? Something that makes it attractive to pigeons.
