15:4410320I met an old friend who is now working as a refuse collector.I thought I'd show a little interest and asked him how the new collection system was operating."We're having teething problems as the Deal drivers when they come over to Dover don't know the area and its the same for us when we operate in Deal on Monday and Tuesdays" he said " not only that the pay is different for drivers collectors and recyclists" he complained. He then went on at great length about the pay structure. In order to calm him down I asked him about the recycling"A load of rubbish" he quipped with a smile.Where does it go " I asked."exactly the same place as your household rubbish" he answered.
To cut a longer story even shorter it would appear that due to costs, operating practices etc.The carefully shifted newspapers bottles etc that we place religiously in our blue refugee holdalls is being tipped down the same chute as your blackbin disappears.
What a fiasco!!!!What a waste of council tax payers money!!

15:5010321That is not news Marek. not only DDC either, it happens a lot.
I did not participate until recently, could not be bothered for that reason, though a fair bit of paper does get recycled. That said, the bottom has dropped out of the recycled paper market and some Councils have been storing it. The problem is when demand picks up there will be a glut of supply. It makes sense at the moment to send it the way of the rest of the rubbish.

Well it was news to me!!!and I'm sure it must be news to other forumites. If there is a problem why not just abandon the recycling run for a couple of months and save on the trucks and fuel?

17:2510329Marek I am surprised that you actually get recycled living in Marek Towers up there in the Mountains of Dover,as in most of this area there is no recycling. The excuses are many, can't go up a grassy slope, too hilly, then Van will not get thru even though the Lorry gets thru. Then 2 weeks ago we in my little humble obode were recycled not by a van,but the refuse lorry?Wonder where that lot went.As I cycled thru the Town this morning I had to swerve around the plastic which had blown out of the Black Boxes, then swerve around the Blue and Green bags that had been blown everywhere.
At the last Council meeting we were told that there was teething problems and it would settle down soon.Yeah!
Don't get me wrong the bin men are having a terrible time some of them working 12hour shifts when it only took them 8hrs before, they do a job I wouldn't do so you have to admire them
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

17:3610330And there was me thinking that recycling meant having another go at the steep hill on yer bike
On a serious note the worlds gone mad, I avidly wash, sort and put out for collection.

18:0510334It was on a news programme within the last few weeks.
China is the destination for a lot of our re-cycled newspaper and the recession has dried up demand there, hence a big drop in the price and an oversupply with some councils storing it.

18:3410338BarryW, Yes I remember watching the same programme it was very informative where they told you the reasons why an established paper recycling business in the UK had to close down by tracking the whole process from the UK to the States and eventually finishing in China.

20:2910357i have never taken household recycling seriously, i knew that about 15 years ago in london from a refuse disposal operative, similar to marek's experience.
the cardboard collections from shops are a different story, that all goes to commercial enterprises that earn out of it.

23:2110377Better than domestic recycling would be a reduction in packaging and a bigger focus on commercial recyling.

07:5610383Hurrah! Totally - we should be targetting the "super"markets and vendors and refusing to accept their gross over packaging. When shopping we should remove the wrapping and leave it on the floor of the shop or the counter, and lobby the stores via mail and email,

08:4810386Our paper goes to Aylesford & we are still receiving a good price. Marek, thank you for that info. I will check it out. Plastic goes to Essex. The vehicles for recycling have seperate sections for each waste type & should be sorted at the kerbside.

09:2710390Bern that's a great idea, but I don't think the security guard who has you pinned to the floor in an arm-lock or the checkout girl who cannot recognise the product without the over-packaging would agree

21:3810446I would like to see the security guard that could arm lock me!!!!

01:1510460Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

08:0610468Isn't it bit odd that when you get sensible answer, the postings ignore it and the thread goes silly.
Oh well.

Firstly Paul W has kindly offered to look into the recycling rumour (see his post #13) I therefore feel justified in raising this very important matter on the forum.I have no reason to doubt the word of a long serving refuse collector ,whom I have known for years nor that of PaulW.
Secondly if forumites then decide the post has been answered although in this case only part answered then I suppose like most things in life we try to make light of it. Thats how conversations develop. It's no bad thing.
I am sure other forumites would agree....it must be something to do with you hitting 60..hehe

12:4810479Roger - please have a little more fun!!!! Conversation is like that! I think it was Peter Ustinov who went a little further and said that love-making was simply a means of carrying on a conversation by other means. Right on, Peter!!!
