i read today that the above mentioned has won an architectural award.
nice to hear a success story from our council.
i reckon that the our new seasports centre is deserving of something similar.

brian
have you seen it from the beach rather than the promenade?
i think it is excellent, well designed for people to have a quiet meal and/or a drink whilst watching the action on the channel.
will make paul b redundant!!

Yes I saw the feature about Deal Pier and the restaurant in The Mercury..but as I understand even local Deal people were baffled as to why it was listed for an award.
Brian I think our seafront centre looks good Im with Howard there. Seems a strong modern design but anything of architectual origin is clearly open to personal interpretation. Some are sure to like it and some to hate it. My only concern is that it looks very close to the water on high tide stormy days. Could it get flooded out!?
I'll see if I can get a picture of it in a minute. Very clear today in the bright sunlight.

The water sports centre is ok, not bad but not great. I wouldn't really call it modern by any stretch of the imagination.
The structure at the end of Deal pier is a serious piece of architecture and quite rightly deserves an award. Beautifully detailed and much better up close than from a distance.

Deal Pier, awards yes but so over budget it is unbelievable, why over budget, well the quote was given and then they found a problem, the cafe is at the end of the pier, and most of the building stuff couldn't go through the entrance, result had to hire a boat as I understand it.Quote was WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY,out but I am sure my learned friend Sue will reveal how much it was more than the original quote.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

I would have thought the Watersports Centre was modern DT as it looks so much like the advanced type structures featured on that C4 programme .. name of that escapes me for the moment. Not a Gherkin its true but for what it is....

It is what it is, but I don't think it merits architectural acknowledgement. As I say it seems OK and fit for purpose. It's a stylish building and looks well thought out, I'm not saying anything negative about the design here. However the only thing that is 'modern' about it, is that it has been built recently. When Wimpy homes build these nasty little developments with PVC Georgian sash windows, they are also 'modern' by this definition. My point is that it is hardly thought provoking, where the structure at the end of Deal pier is a delight.

Prince Charles should keep his mouth closed on such subjects (and most others for that fact). I'm amazed the RIBA let him address them this year.

can we forget the architectural arguments for a minute.
the building is actually designed for its purpose, giving great views over the channel and all the shipping movements.
i cannot think of a better place to be in dover for an evening drink.

When Deal Pier Cafe was first discussed the figue was £750,000 put into the budget it ended up costing double that amount .That is why I voted against it .The extra money it cost could have gone towards toilet refurbishments ,Kearsney Abbey Lakewalls and of course the Clarendon play area .I was a lone voice .
The Seasports Centre has taken years for completion and it was built to house water sports .I dont think a wonderful building was ever required just one building to house all of the sports .
