  Press Release by the Dover District Council.
  MULTI MILLION POUND TOWN CENTRE
  REDEVELOPMENT.
  
  Multi million pound proposals to develop the St James,s area,have been given the green light by Dover District Councillors.
  
  The Council owns a large part of the site and agreed that the proposals can proceed to a formal planning application, subject to the resolution of a number of minor design issues.
  Upon resolution of these issues, an application could be made within the next month.
  
  The development includes an anchor superstore, shops and restaurants,a 100bedroom hotel, flats, a visitor centre,and a landscaped shoppers car park.
  
  The scheme was presented to Full Council by architects Dyer on behalf of the Council,s development partners Bond City Ltd.
  
  At the moment, the site contains a vacant multi storey car park and the Burlington House office block, togetherwith the Russell Street car park and adjoining buildings.
  The development of the area is a key priority for the Council as set out in the Corporate plan.
  The redevelopmentof the area is included in the council,s Local Plan and the Council has published a planning brief for the site folliwing consultation.
  
  The Council stresses that no planning application has yet been receivedon this matter.
  Any application will be considered on its own merits in accordance with standard procedures.
  
  Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council,said "The recent Council decision brings the Dover St James,s development a stage nearer fruition.
  Its completion will bring a major boost to the economic regeneration of the area.
  Together with the announcement of the planning application for the White Cliffs Business Park Phase 11, the town and the area have the potential to take Dover District forward into a new phaseof economic growth.

  you can expect to be met by a resounding silence vic.
  
  i realise that there are always problems with big developments, but when one is confronted with big statements, one expects results.
  
  the townspeople get fed up with photo opportunities of leading councillors wearing hard hats claiming that everything is done and dusted.

  In other towns or citys..BANG..it's done...Dover.....................WE have all of these Fantastic plans..........................We'll get back to you in a while........................and it goes on and on and on....................we have to dig this up........we have to move this..................and that..................one more photo or two.............. or three...................

  Hello all
  I think if nowt else an update would be welcome if ASDA no longer coming to Dover lets be open and honest about it
  
  This development was to be the flagship for that area.
  
  
  Would be nice just to have the latest information.

  kieth,asda is only a supermarket nothing sinister about it.there again just to be cyical how about putting tescos,sainsburys,waitrose and every other bloody supermarket down there along with the tory hq and some gay bars thrown in for good measure.

  In front of me is the York Street site planning BRIEF
  1.8 The site is currently owned by several different parties,therfore the achiement of comprehensive redevelopment will depend on site assembly and the relocation of existing uses.
  Every effort will be made to RESOLVE and land ownership issues through negotiation, but in the last resort the Council will be prepared to consider the use of its Compulsory PURCHASE POWERS.
  The Council already OWNS a significant portion of the site.

  I have had this brief in my box for years and just got it out again on the front in my hand writing is over £20.000 that must have been the cost of the Brief, in the Brief are 10pages that makes the cost of each page over £2000 and who has paid this,well it is you and me in COUNCIL TAX,
  and that was in 2002 alot of cash.In looking on page 3 at no/3.4 (A) We have ,concentrate on new shops in Dover and deal in the town centres of Dover and Deal.
  (b)Provide for the needs of the local population as is practical,taking into account the limitations imposed by Dover and Deal positions in the shopping hierarchy.
  (C)Ensure that shops are accessible by a range of means of transport including walking and cycling.
  Now we come to the very good one
  (D)IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF TOWN CENTRE SHOPPING AND ITS ENVIRONMENT.
  
  Do you now think that the £20.000or more cash of ours was well spend?.
  and that the District Council acted on the brief of 2002.

  Interesting stuff there Vic so well done with all that. As the Conservatives are very big on "aspirations" lately (as opposed to solid committment) like we saw with Ken Clarke at the weekend..the local Conservatives also had "aspirations" with regard to item D in your last post. But as that aspect has failed miserably we can only assume the idea was only ever aspirational !!

  Thank you Paul for the feed back more yet from the Brief+letters from D.D.C. and D,D.H.to me when I was a Town Cllr and trying very hard over the Motes Bulwark at East Cliffe for over two years i was writing and talking to the owners and D.D.C D.D.H. and kent Highways to get that site done up, but as you can see i did not have any luck but still have all my papers on it.

  In the Dover Express today page 26 In business,under Pride in our town future by the director Anne Knight.
  I will not bor you with all the rubbish in it, but the last two black dots of it.
  (A)Restructure the town and improve the environment.
  (B)Upgrade transport linksand accessibility.
  Now go back to the planning brief (Above)of 2002 and read that again, did Miss Knight write both of them .
  Now back to page 26 of the paper at the end, she wrote,It is estimated that our current projects (What projects, are they) will provide about £500 million of INVESTMENT FOR DOVER,creating more than 5,500jobs. and when will this be done by 2035.
  The way we are going now Dover will not be here in 2035,I know I will not.
  But like 2002 all this talk is costing us the payers lots and lots of cash.
  My point is stop the talking and the dreaming lets get it moving now if the D.D.C. can not to that and they can not because they have no funds, then tell us the true story not all this rubbish we read about.
  Nothing as been done to this town for over 35years and it will be the same for years ahead.
  
  again sorry about this because it is be nice to all this week but wait till next week.

  looked at their website a few days ago, usual old junk about the new jerusalem.
  
  it looks like there are about a dozen organisations involved, never hear anything from them.
  
  how much funding do they get, and who from?
  
  maybe that is a secret too.

  Howard it is the same Dover pride Yes they are funded by you and me and all of us, what are we geting for that,i will tell you we are geting the same reports as 9years ago and it is not working, we know we will never see all this in Dover, all they do is take one old building down a year and put a fence round it.

  why cannot the money go to KCC and the various district and unitary councils?
