17:1173412 Love them, or loathe the smoke and dirt that went with them, steam trains were very much part of everyday life for more than 130 years. Lets just keep it locally here, as there are a number of photograph`s in existance from all areas of Dover, which in many cases, show`s not just the train, but much more interesting for other`s, the background scenery, much of which has changed but as in the photograph above, still recognisable. The above picture was taken of a Merchant Navy class locomotive leaving the Marine station on 16 September 1950. A split screen Morris 1000 parked up.

18:5173421 The new Marine station was completed just before the first world war, but not used by passenger`s until January 1919.

19:4873442Wow Kath, where do you keep getting these great picture`s from? I`ve only seen one other coloured example of that location, have to dig it out. Nice looking layout there Paul, is it your`s? I could tell it wasn`t real, cos there`s no unsightly rubbish laying about.

22:0373463How lovely they look. Steam trains are wonderful, I've been on the Orient Express twice, I felt like I was stepping back in time.

19:1273737 Compare this later view with Kath`s above. A post-card I`ve had for many years, with halfpenny postage on the rear.

19:1773738This is another - the thing that interests me and I can find hardly anything about is the 'pole' at the back known as Spion Kop ??!!
Been nice knowing you :)

19:2373740It`s the same photo Paul. Interesting though, as it shows my one to be an original but coloured in for sale as a post-card. I know there was a race horse in the 20s named Spion Kop. One of Gresley`s pacific`s on the East Coast mainline named after it.

19:3473744And both named after the Battle of Spion Kop in the Second Boer War, of course. As Spion Kop means "Spy Hill" or "Lookout Hill" then I presume that this has relevance to Scotchie's note about the pole.

19:5773745I have just checked "Shakespeare Cliff - A People's History 1843-1973"
It refers to 130 foot high "The Skeleton Lighthouse" constructed around the time of the first channel tunnel in the 1880s and removed in 1913.

13:4473823 Looking more like a rural wayside goods yard, this is the Eastern docks back in the 50s.

13:5973827That's an interesting one, Colin. The ex SECR "P" class were attractive little locos and four have been preserved on the Bluebell and the KESR. My wife remembers she used to run along and jump on the back when she was a kid and they were traversing the seafront. Used to get told off and made to get down, of course.

15:4073833 They certainly were attractive little loco`s Ed, and it is nice to see some saved from scrap. That Wainwright livery must rank as one of the all time best`s, seeing them on the Bluebell, along with the C, H, & O1 and of course, the `D` class up at York. Above is another shot of a `P` class, this time heading towards the clock tower in pre-war Southern days.

20:3373969 Regarding Kath`s fine picture above on #3, this is what the original wooden trestle carrying the railway line looked liked from Shakespeare beach. A beautiful SE&CR `D` class locomotive heading a boat train bound for London.

18:1877281 The same scene as the first two picture`s above, though this one is in colour. It was taken by Mr R.C. Riley, one of the most prolific railway photographer`s of his day, and I`d guess this shot was taken on 23 May 1959, as I have other one`s of his from that day when he visited here. This comes from a book I bought today at the Townhall bookshop. Note the lovely old Ford.
