do we give up on this institution?
no one can ever get a response from them.
the minutes are about 2 months out of date.
they take turns on being mayor.
how many people know who their town councillors are?
i am luckier than most, we have sheila and bob, well known and approachable figures.
what do others think?

Funny you should mention that Howard, it sort of ties in with what I was told today.
I was informed today by a well respected Dover Councillor that if 10 or more people put in writing their wish that our Mayor be voted for by the people of the town then that wish must, by law , be granted. Now I'm sure we could easily get that amount of people just from this letters club - couldn't we? Why should it always be decided from within? As Howard said - they take it in turns.
Personally I think Bob Markham has been an excellent mayor and it seems a shame he will be ousted tonight in favour of Diane Smallwood, who I'm sure is a lovely person, but it seems like Bob has only been in power for 5 mins.
Just as a matter of interest, who would you like to see as our mayor? Doesn't have to be a councillor, just a Dover resident.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

i cannot argue with your post keith.
you have indeed shown your antipathy towards another tier of government.
i have to agree that you have been proved right in dover.
no problem with sheila, she is always there in the firing line, what about the others.
all photo opportunities and sound bites that they never back up.
when i have needed to contact DDC, i get a response of some kind.
on the face of it the stout burghers of DTC are simply waiting their chance of being mayor.

this is turning into an interesting thread.
jacqui
i would like someone from the voluntary sector to be given a chance.
we are inundated with people that give of their services without reward.
we read about a bunch of peole honoured by the town council only last week.
let me start the ball rolling.
who ran the buckland hospital radio facility for years?
an anagram would be "nerry tunn"

HOWARD
Its the people(not all as you say) on it
We now are paying for 3 tiers of local govt and its getting costly
as iv posted before today we have 8 cllrs representing priory/maxton/ems vale far to many
dont need 3 councils all costing us.
I believe in decisions being made at the lowest possible level, and as town council came in hoped to see District or county change or go but it didnt haopen and we went from 2 to 3
I think im pleased now town council not given to much power but still costly when you add up all 3 councils

On mayor, it is an annual thing and 12 months is what each mayor serves, some do more than 1
I wont comment further on the present mayor only to say Dianne Smallwood will do well for Dover.
SADLY you have 18 cllrs to choose from
but there could be a debate on the need for a mayor?

If California can have Arnie S for Governor, can't we have Bob Hoskins for Mayor? Or perhaps Ray Winstone - someone with some muscle and clout who can "fix" things.....!?

Jaqui, every year in the D.E. there is a notice on the public election of a Mayor I think you need 5% of the population to sign a petition to have a people Mayor, watch Vic now!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Is not about position, but cost.
We already have 3 very costly councils
add a peoples mayor and more for your council tax bill to rise.
on top of that what would he/she do if theres already a mayor? 2 mayors?
the carnivals come to mind and the problems that caused.
I think I'v made my views known to VIC he has by the looks of it decided that he will ignore good advice
but of course he has the democratic right and of course Like Barryw I wish all labour candidates well first, and suspect VIC will be humilated again.
Mine was not a political one, mine was thinking more of VIC and his family, it wasn't nice to see VIC totally destroyed at the general election count, after having he impression he was going to win??????
then having advised him not to stand in local elections(for him and his family)he stood!!!!
As iv said VIC has lots of burning energies. and theres loads of groups to channel this into.
But im sure VIC knows what hes doing

errrr Keith, I dont think you actually meant the following in respect of me.. """Like Barryw I wish all labour candidates well first"""
I think I know what you mean, in my case I wish the Conservative candidates well first!!!!!

Woops, you know what I mean, was trying to let VIC down lightly, but it looks like it aint worked.
I do feel for VIC and on general election night I saw how he was, it wasn't nice, I seriously do feel that VIC could channel all his energies to far better effect in many voluntary bodies.
But knowing VIC he will continue this crusade, I just don't want him to destroy himself, would rather see him benefit and enjoy the work he gets involved in.
mine is of concern for him but its always his call, and its great democracy allows this.
have a good day

howard ... how's about trying this new form on the Town Council website?
http://www.dovertown.co.uk/Contact.aspx
It has a menu of individually-named people you can selct from, to contact, too.
We need an elected Mayor, chosen by the people of the town.
Then, and only then, will the true voices of the tired, downtrodden and embittered Dovorian populace be heard.
No offence to anyone in particular but what honestly is the point of cosy, unelected little ceremonial quangoes?
It's the way forward, elected mayors. Think of Boris, for example.
Regards all,
Andy
