I felt embarrased to be a local in Dover today I was waiting for a bus in Pencester just looking at the river over the bridge when the antics of a group of low-lifes in Pencester Gardens with cans of Special Brew and brown plastic bottles of White Lightening at their sides started swearing loudly for all to hear and thought I was going to be treated to a floor show when three of them started to square up to each other trying to exchange blows.( thought it was a alcohol free zone )If they are not in Pencester they take up residence in the shelters along the sea front which is not good when tourists (yes we do have some who stay in Dover)take a walk along the prom, my wife saw one today riding his bike and in his drinks holder on the crossbar was a can of Special Brew (which fitted very nicely) bet he had to wait to open that one after weaving in and out of people on the pavement

i quite agree phil, i have no problem with the thirstiness of some, just the behaviour that shows our town in a bad light.
pencester gardens is only an alcohol free zone when someone is instructed by a uniformed officer to discontinue imbibing.
the seafront are just cheap lodgings for the less sociably acceptable.
the aroma of urine and bouquet of vomit every morning is not conducive to encouraging customs from visitors.

Welcome Phil. I didnt realise this was still happening in Pencester. Its absolutely abysmal. Only last week at the Boat Race event was discussing with Councillors the need for a beer tent at gatherings like that, it would give the event and events like it a focal point, but the DDC wont allow it. It seems they can stop responsible people having a glass of something on a blazing hot day but cannot prevent those who just ignore the process and carry on getting blitzed anyway.
I dont see why a 3 hour license or whatever couldnt be issued. The current policy isnt preventing the drunks from doing their usual thing anyway so whats to lose!

Just to clarify Paul, I don't know who was "discussing" a beer tent at the Boat Race. The Boat Race will be expanded next year to be bigger and different but it is primarily a children's event and a beer tent won't be part of it. So I've no idea where that came from.

Pleased to hear that Terry. Why people cant go a couple of hours with out a drink beggars belief.By not granting a licence in Pencester DDC are setting an excample. Its not the fault of DDC thar the police donot take action against the drunks.Already we have youths going into the new play area.I dont know what is happening with the CCTV,costs enough. There is sometghing about the attitude of folks in Dover, and requesting a beer tent at an event aimed at children just shows the mentality.I wish the home page showed less of beer drinking.I had my birthday bash last week and it was not ruined by people drinking to access.

It wasnt specifically aimed at your event Terry but its just that when 'adults' go there to Pencester to no matter what event..all you can do is stand around like a spare part as there is nowhere to get any kind of refreshment. I think a tent..doesnt have to be beer but even Pimms on a summers day.. would draw people in as there is something to do, a focal point for chat and refrshment. I feel it would make a difference..ie more people would come..not just for drinking but for the social aspect.

Sue we crossed over there..I dont think events need to be ruined by drinking..its a blazing hot day and you cant get a drink of any kind for love nor money..so you have to leave the event and go somewhere else. It doesnt make sense.
Well okay its a kind of beery frontpage at the moment but thats unusual, and as the frontpage changes every few days we try to cover all aspects of local life within our constraints.

Ok Paul, get your point. It's just that you said "the Boat Race event was discussing with Councillors the need for a beer tent ". The implication being that LRCF were. Perhaps you missed out the personal pronoun!
I daresay there will be refreshments there next year but sadly no Pimms!

Drunks were causing a problem at the Hellfire weekend.
I called the police to ask for an officer to attend to enforce the by-law but they did not bother to turn up...
I spent a long time on the phone to their call centre and had to keep repeating myself, as there seemed to be a failure to understand good English and they had absolutely no local knowledge. I had might as well have been speakinbg to someone in Delhi....
So much for a police 'service'.....
Having a beer does not cause you to be "beery", and there is the world of difference betwen enjoying a drink and being a drunk.

quite right bern, having a social summer drink in a beer tent in pencester gardens, is hardly an asbo offence.
cannot see the point of one at "the boat race " though, different clientele to say "the hellfire weekend".
barry
you would have got through to maidstone, most do not dover lies in the garden county.
the trick is, i have learned from experience, is not to get involved in a discussion with the operators.
just shout the words "smith st dover" altercation etc, put the phone down, they will be there in minutes.
if you start discussing the issue you will eventually feel that you are wasting police time.
Howard - I like the way you think.........

talking from experience bern.
the operators are trained to make the caller sound like a simpleton that is imagining things.that is why i have so much time for the PCSO chaps and chapesses, they are on the manor and relate to the people that matter.
i have little time for the ones that sit in the canteen or their car.

You should try calling them out to something like the Drop Redoubt without a postcode
Been nice knowing you :)

pimms tent in pencester has just conjured up a mental image of everyone doing the pimms oclock dance to Prince Charming by Adam Ant (like the tv ad)with the drunks behind doing their version of the White Lightening Shuffle think of the headlines CLASSIC
