18:4132844we have all read that 10 new nuclear power stations are planned in the UK, not one at the old dungeness site.
the reason being the natural beauty and wildlife of the area.
1) the old power station is still there, so forget the natural beauty bit.
2) the wildlife co-existed for decades with dungeness b.
our old friend former conservative leader and one time prime ministerial candidate, michael howard is kicking up a stink beacuse of the effect on jobs in the area.

08:5332869Yes the government are fast-tracking nuclear power through...as I think the realisation has finally dawned that we are not going to have enough energy for our needs within a relatively few years.
Yes I believe the local people who were featured recently on TV want the latest power station in Dungeness but although the TV programme featured people who want it, for employment reasons, you can bet your life there are others who just as vociferously dont want it.
The lobby against any kind of power structure is always very strong. They couldnt even build a relatively harmless windfarm locally, so sadly in general terms, apart from those who want the jobs, we are a nation of NImbys(although I must admit I suffer from the same affliction myself!)
This time though the government are not having any of it...and are fast tracking these latest structures through planning. Thats as I understand it anyway.

08:5832871Interesting debate to be had here, Labour moved on it and locals also you will find in large numbers also oppose this at Dungerness.
Dont go with this land of outstanding natural beauty bit.
This debate is another that will go on and on

10:3932883When I first moved down this side and stayed in Folkestone I used to look from the balcony at Dungeness and think on the film 'The China Syndrome' and all that went on in that drama.
Am I wrong in thinking that, a little like Chenobyl, the site will be radioactive for a millenium? basically, can there be anything further done to the area that has not already been done?
Wave machines and windies have so little impact, surely we are debating long after the horse has bolted here.
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

11:0932884Nuclear power stations do stay radioactive for a long time. They should be built on something solid that is going to last. Dungeness is just a bank of shingle that has built up over several hundred years with tide and wave action. It is slowly being washed along the coast. Ever since the first power station was built a fleet of lorries have been busy taking shingle from the south side and putting it back on the north side. It seem mad to me to build yet another one, with possible rising sea levels to contend with as well. If Michael Howard wants to create jobs he should suggets they be created by taking apart the old power station and putting it somewhere safer.

19:5832934apparently the old one cannot be dismantled for approx 50 years.
the PM told bbc south east that there was still a possibility of a new one being built at dungeness in the future.
he is normally a man of his word.
