Hope everyone has a super day. It's nice to see a Jock Prime Minister flying the flag of St George on the mast above 10 Downing St.I am cooking my Filipina wife a traditional Steak and Ale Pie served with Mash potatoes and carrots followed by a Bakewell Tart...I do like a nice tart with a heart.....all washed down with a glass of English strawberry cider its new onto the market but very refreshing. Then to round off the evening watch Man United obtain a result in Barcelona in tonights Champions League semi final 1st leg.Cheers

Yes a happy St Georges Day to one and all. Marek looks very well organised there and has the day planned well. Lovely food lined up too...steak and ale pie with added veg...yummmmm.
There was stuff on Radio 4 this morning about the English reluctance to celebrate the occasion, and so it continues on...perhaps people dont quite buy into the St George and the Dragon story...I dont know. I didnt even know it was St Georges Day til they mentioned it on the radio this morning. There was no build up, no pre-match hype.

Marek your meal sounds delicious, I wish my husband could cook!!

Yes! Happy St Georges Day have a great day.

It's Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puds for me.
I can not see any reason why we should not celebrate the day, just as Scotland, Wales and Ireland celebrate their Saints Days. Should be a Bank Holiday then we could let our hair down.
So the top of the morning to you PaulB have a great day.

We always fly a St George's flag here (except in the high summer, when we fly a pirate flag instead!). We got a new St George's recently, to go up for the first time for the day - though at the moment it's very rainy!
Up here there are celebrations for St George's day, from English Heritage who do quite a big event at one of their properties, complete with mummers and re-enactors, through dancing the Morris, where a number of sides get together, wearing a rose, to celebrate in the evening, right down to cards in the local shops.
There's a Royal Society of St George, with branches across the world (main address in Folkestone!), and I see that Google, bless 'em, have a little George fighting a dragon today.

It's great to read about how other forumites are celebrating St Georges day.In the past the NF and BNP hijacked the flag but its heartwarming to see it back in the hands of the people.
Blakes at 13.00 hrs eh...better prepare another wobbly legs excuse for the wife...well the meals prepared all I have to do is put the pastry on the pie dish and slam it in t'oven as we up'north.

Anyone going to the Zeebrugge day commemoration? I'm truly sorry we can't be there.
Sorry about Blake's afterwards, too.
Think of us in spirit, please, as we''ll be thinking also
Happy St George's Day.

sounds like a great meal at marek's place, pity about the strawberry cider though.
an insulation firm gives its workers the day off on st georges day.
the trouble with a public holiday would be, that the date is too close to easter and the 2 may bank holidays.
a bit too much disruption, i think.
a good time for an extra bank holiday would be the middle of june.

Well if 23rd April is not right for a bank holiday the why not the 11th November.
The 11th November would mean we could remember all those that gave their lives for this Country in the Morning on the correct day, then in the afternoon have celebrations and events for the children to celebrate the future.
I think in Australia and New Zealand I think they do this with ANZAC Day. They have a National Holiday with big parades in the morning and in the afternoon they have family and children's events to celebrate the future.
Just a thought, have a remainder of a happy St Georges Day.

Sure to be a good time at Blakes - wish I was there - Happy St. George's day to one and all - will keep my texas flag away - have put up the only other one I have (RAF) - hope it qualifies as it does have a quarter size union jack in the corner!
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........
I started my St georges day by fixing a couple of flags up in castle st - there should be more to follow - then thought that the weather would be good enough.
Dressed in my working Councillor robes I went to the Zebrugge service at the cemetary with all the usual councillors etc then at the town hall with the largest crowd I have seen ( it was the 90th anniversary of the raid ) during which occasions the rain came down incessantly and thus as drowned rats ( how apt) we got to the Maison dieu for a cup of tea and welcomed the guests from all over incl some guy from the Isle of wight ( more news on that soon ) and many from belgium as well as our own ex servicemen and cadets.
The best picture must be that of Chris Precious all robed up with his baby slung on his belly protecting it from the rain with his hat!
We ended the Day at a Rotary St georges Dinner with a talk about Churchill and the company of some super friends. So I'm St Georged out!
Must now go find some more flags and get the baskets ready for the street - am hoping to see the best display ever in castle street but first have to fix two baskets up - volunteers welcome one Saturday soon then Blakes for lunch? anybody?
