As you say, annoying that you cannot see who you are bidding against on Ebay these days. I used to refrain from bidding for items I could see you were already bidding for. If you recall, we once unknowingly had a bidding war against each other before we were aware of each others handles!
If I see a book of which I had not previously heard, I always look it up on Abe Books before bidding. I once bid something astronomic for "Dover and the Great War" by J.B. Firth thinking it was a rarity I would not see again, only to find numerous copies available on Abe at much cheaper prices!
