07:3910381Sue states "..I had not realised how left wing this forum is ."
Excellent.... but I think most of us are socialists and if our opinions differ then so be it.
Bern..let me praise you for all your hard work, long hours. the travelling, the attention you pay to detail and your unselfish attitude...well you did say that everyone likes a bit of praise now and then...lol

07:5410382Marek, I blush.
Sue - I apologise if I seem over critical. I am not sure why that would make this a left wing forum, but press on......I know you work hard and are well intentioned and clearly that is a Good Thing, so I am sorry if my feedback is hard for you. It is genuinely not personal - I don't know you and wouldn't recognise you if we passed in the street!! But I suppose I do expect particular things from public servants, hard work is one of them, humility is another. And absolutely, we should strive to avoid being judgemental: my comments are responses to postings and not personally judgemental - I am sure you are very nice, work hard, are charming company and all that, and I wouldn't presume to comment on you as a human being, but I reserve the right to comment on your presentation as a public servant. I also strive to be as inoffensive as possible and to balance my comments. I hope I succeed most of the time.........so please don't take personally my feedback - I am sure you do a cracking job and continue to do so.

09:0210388I know Sue doesn't need me to post my support for her on here, but I have to say I agree most certainly that the majority of Forumite posters are indeed left-wing socialists, arguing the toss, or picking fault with anyone who has a different view.
Sue also advises us on here about what she does and is responsible for - it's not boasting, it's called communicating.

Roger its not about picking faults its about alternative viewpoints.

12:5210407Well said Roger - I totally agree.Sue is probably the hardest working woman I know. She does more hours working for Dover and its constituants than most people know about and should be thought of very highly by us all. On top of that she is a lovely, caring lady with a fantastic sense of humour and an enormous amount of fun. Not many ladies of her age are as super active as she is and I admire her a lot.Sue I don't know how you keep your cool sometimes my darling, but you do and that fact alone makes you a lady, and a very good one too. You go girl - Dover could do with a lot more like you at its helm. Some people like to knock what they can never aspire to - someone famous said that but I forget who it was now - but it applies.xx
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

before you became a councillor, you almost comandeered the old dover web forum with endless attacks on the labour administration, even interrupting non related threads with accusations aimed at the councillors.
why do you think that people cannot be allowed to give a critical view of the current council or current councillors?

19:2410437Ah, those were the days Howard, when you came from Ilford. Good old. Brian Martin added much to the old web forum and got a real roasting. Miss Pixie grew up to be Jacqui. Sid was pre-carnival etc.

i keep asking about brian.
does anyone keep in touch with him, the way he used to tell a yarn with that straight face used to leave me in stitches.
he must be about 70 now, i remember him posting about collecting his first state pension from the post office.
also
what about hooky, used to be a great alternative viewpoint, kept everyone on their toes.
last i heard he was called to the bar.
i will wait the usual comments on that last bit.

21:3510444I am bored with the argy-bargy my threads trigger frankly, but finally I will just say - please read the threads about SN and understand that I am not being personal, not being horrible, just commenting and reflecting on the presentation of a local rep, which I believe is still valid........I have been at great pains to accent the positive, to reassure that I can see what a great person she must be (even though I do not know her), that she clearly works hard etc etc etc etc etc etc etc (
) It is well within a politicians remit to hear mild criticisms and reflections and to be accountable for appearances and manner - presentation is a large part of a politicians armoury. It is not my intention to hurt, but I do have the right to disagree, debate and reflect with, for and about local politicians. To be honest, it must be something they expect. I have absolutely nothing else to say about this - it's all been said and made no difference, and it is very, very boring!

21:4210448i have never read anything insidious in your posts bern.
i am not a left wing socialist like yourself and marek, but in a healthy democracy everyone has the right to take issue with their elected reprsentatives.
there are a few of our elected blah blah that complain about it, but i feel sure that they did the self same thing before they entered the political arena.

23:0210456I'd like to thank Paul Watkins for his reply, explaining to me just exactly what the council are doing to address the issue that I raised. I earnestly hope that these initiative are successful.
Taking into consideration some of the points put on this thread I decided I would have a quick look into alternatives to social housing, just to ensure that I was not shouting, and throwing my dolly out the pram, for no good reason. If my fellow forumites do not find it too boring (if you do don't read any more) I will, very briefly, summarise my findings.
To purchase a four bedroomed house in Dover the cheapest on offer is 135K, a very reasonable price I hear you all say, I agree, very reasonable and I could probably get a mortgage of 100K for my salary, any suggestions as to how I could raise the other 35K will be gratefully received.
OK, private rent. Only 4 properities on offer in Dover. Monthly rent 700 - 800 pounds, deposit ranging from 700 - 1000 pounds.
Given these interesting facts (and I post them purely for their interest). I really, really hope that the councils initiatives are successful.
PS - Bern, thanks, I should have known you weren't having a go at me.

18:5910576In the interests of fairness I thought I should post that I looked at the new council house website again today and was pleasantly surprised to find almost 3 pages of properties, a vast improvement on last week. Most were, of course, 1 and 2 bedroom properties with a couple of 3 bedroom houses (alas no 4 bedroom houses). Giving those that need it more choice of where to go just as it should be. I am content with this scheme (not that my opinion matters much) and hope to see continued improvement, you never know there might even be a 4 bedroomed house on there one day (hopefully before the children all grow up and leave home).
