Heard a gem on R4 this morning about the heroine of this thread...it seems the poor ould thing has only made £160million pounds so far this year, calculations up to June. Figures courtesy of Forbes magazine, that barometer of the rich pocket book. Extraordinary amount of money..totally extraordinary. More than the gross national product of some countries I would imagine.
She has got to be the highest literary earner of all time.Making 160million in six months is some going. Popular or what!? She has accumulated more money up til june this year than the next nine people in the earnings list put together. If market forces dictate what a success story is, then this is clearly it.
Other writers of perhaps greater worthiness, John Steinbeck, Scott Fitzgerald, Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, have all had their work filmed by Hollywood and although all great writers they have achieved nothing like the same level of wealth. Baffling indeed. JK obviously hit the richest vein imagineable by clearly tapping into a need.
Just 10 years ago she was a single mum living on benefits. Well there you are. Who'd have beleived it!
