19:2366356a new government idea proposes a cut in benefits to druggies and alkies that do not seek treatment.
could be a tricky one, each one costs the state i.e. us 50 grand per annum.
clearly if they are not doing anything about their problem and have no intention of looking for gainful employment then they should really receive nothing.
however they still have to live so crime would be a near certainty the only way they could survive.
any ideas on this one?

19:3166358Yes!!!
The out of work junkies and alkies will work hard at raising the crime figures.
Blackmailing them will do no good at all if they do not want to kick their habits.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

This weekend I'm buying a bigger baseball bat.

19:3566363i knew this would kick start a serious debate.
melissa the crime figures will be unaffected, not many people bother to report crimes, even if they do it does not mean they will be recorded.

19:3766364There is no doubt that people with addictions deprived of the means to fund them will do anything it takes to get those means. This proposal has soooo not been thought through and advice from those who know has been bypassed.........

19:5266369What is the nature of the advice that has been bypassed Bern?

20:0566370That people who have addictions are not rational, and there is a real risk of increased proper crime and violence, and there are better ways of doing it!!!

21:2966391I think that they should do what GMP do with their regular burglary and twocking clientèle, which is regularly stop them for a "chat", randomly visit them at home etc. just to make their lives inconvenient and make them aware that the police are watching them

21:3066392I agree with what you say Bern and in particular that the policy has not been thought through properly.
Any addiction is a problem, firstly many alcoholics are in denial and refuse to accept the fact that they have a problem, secondly a drug addict is probably already stealing to feed his/hers addiction and to stop benefits would mean that they would steal more.
As for better means of dealing with it that is a difficult one. Statistics show that very few heroin addicts can give up the habit permanently and simply return to their old ways. The same applies to an alcoholic, although the success rate is somewhat better.

22:4166408we must remember that many addicts live normal lives and hold down good jobs.
the city of london is home to many of them.
what we are talking about are those on benefits.

00:0566421Geoffrey Bacon was a 90 year old war veteran from Camberwell in London, not far from Kings College hospital. On 26th April last, a black person broke into his home, and beat and kicked him on the floor, and fled with £40 and his bus pass. He never recovered, he died a couple of days ago, and police have offered a £20,000 reward for his assailent. This area is notorious for druggies, and many hospital beds taken up to accommodate this scum. We need a vigilante or a hanging to rid the place of them. I place no value whatsoever on this form of human life.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

07:4266426I am confident that to manage the problem we need to see that the term "addict" covers many forms. Addicts are not rational - the need for the substance outweighs other matters - but also may not be criminals - at least not the kind that get caught! Addicts can be charming or ruthless, shabby or wealthy.......the common characteristic is the addiction and the drive for it.
It is not a simple matter, and addicts are not all scum - the guy who killed the elder in London may or may not have been an addict, whatever, he is now a killer. Some addicts will do anyting for their habit, some don't need to. If there are no benefits coming in it will create a need. Yes, we can do it better!

10:1666449Mel - he wouldn't dare

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

13:2166492Dear Bern according to your post no8 there are better ways to treat addicts??
Have we at last stumbled upon the one person in all the world who has the ultimate answer to the problem??
You state in your post that you obviously have the solution, I trust you wont go all coy on us and tell us how exactly these "Better ways" work??
You never know you could end up being loved by the addicts, but more importantly you could be loved by the poor tax payer who has to put up with this scourge.
