17:4934533Thats right, after all the crocodile tears 5 years ago we now see Labour are planning to see the Port.
Charlie Elphicke comments on Conservativehome.com:
"""Selling off the Port of Dover will come as a great surprise to the people of Dover, as a solemn pledge was given by Labour at the last election that they would not do this. Indeed, it became the touchstone pledge of their campaign in the Dover & Deal constituency.""""
No doubt Labour's plans will not feature any of the assurances and investments the now cancelled Conservative plans had. Charlie has spoken against a sale full stop.

18:0234537that proves my point, to the average person there is very little difference, if any, between the parties.
last time it was the blues, this time the reds.
good to see that charlie is standing against it, what about the national party though?

18:1034538I would just like to say it was the blues last time said "We would sell the port, they are now saying the reds will do it if they get back in.After talking to the top men of U.K.I.P.About just this they have told me that if I get in at DOVER that the party would stand by me,as you know i have always said and that is backed up in the local papers at the time "That the port of Dover should never be sold off to anyone it is not for sell never have never will,That is what I said at the last General Election and will be saying it again at the next."NO SELL OFF,OF THE PORT OF DOVER." and this time I do have the backing of a party.
Thank you.

18:1434540The difference is hypocrisy.......
Nationally the Party is not against sale of assets to help reduce the deficit but timing is all important and would not necessarily do it in a panic as Labour are doing at a cut price.

18:3134544Please take it from me that both the reds and the blues are behind and supporting the sale of the port of Dover, but they will not tell you that till after the next Election they know it will cost them alot of votes,I will be doing the public meetings again this time if they hold them like last time and this is one thing I will keep on to them about.

23:0534566Cutting through the party propaganda, this was always on the cards. The state, irrespective of government, needs to generate cash to reduce debt and as such the sale of assets, reduction in civil service staff levels, moving staff out of London etc. are all distinct likelihoods.

23:1034569we have a current MP, a prospective mp and victor that are all against this privatisation.
the winner of the next election will have a lot of local opinion against the idea.
8 December 2009
07:4134574And when did that last work? No-one in Dover is against the idea of a local hospital...........................

09:1534577Our hapless and useless Labour MP certainly seems to know a lot less about what his Labour Government are up to than his Conservative opponents....
Remember before the last election when Watty warned about what was happening to Buckland Hospital? GP denied it.
Now over the Port, Charlie warned what is happening ages ago.....
I take no satisfaction from this at all. Dover is far more important and that is why we need a change both locally as well has nationally. We have been let down time and time again by a second rate perpetual backbench no-body of an MP who is not even trusted by his own leadership with the truth. What is more he is willing to accept their lies.

what was the local party view on the issue of the port workers being shafted?
there was nothing said at the time, i seem to remember charlie elphicke raising the subject of security being handed over to a private company, but the press did not report anything else.
there was no support for workers from blue posters on here either.

20:5234613I'll assume that you're just being playful Bazza. Just like Charlie's silly post on Facebook.
Simply, a report has just come out. Ages ago the govt asked Trust Ports to review their governance. The report also clarifies the current law which says that trust ports are allowed to suggest proposals for voluntary privatisation.
THAT IS ALL.
According to Bazza and Charlie that suddenly makes it Labour Party policy to sell the Port of Dover. It is not.
Dover is not for sale and Gwyn will keep his promise. Feel free to quote me.

21:2134615you may well be right matthew, but it is coming up to an election so any attacks on him or his party must be deflected or defended promptly, before any rumour becomes fact.
gywn would be welcome to give his take on here, his staff monitor this forum, so he knows what is being said.

23:3634618Not really Guzzler....
We all know the serious fiscal problem Brown has created and this is one of his 'solutions'.... The left will twist and turn but they are as devious and utterly useless as ever.
Howard. I said at the time that the local party would not take a view on that as such. It is a matter for the Parliamentary spokesman and he did speak out. Personally it did not bother me but then I am much more right wing than Charlie.

you are more right wing than attilla the hun, if you had been around in the thirties and forties you would have been thrown out of the gestapo for being too brutal.
