Perhaps somebody 'should take one for the team' and go in and nose around?

Ok, I'll do it, I'll drag myself into a pub and drink beer for the good of the Forum, I'll go in tomorrow morning on my way to the market. Report and photos to follow!

indeed tom such acts of selflessness built the great british empire, looks like they are expecting to be busy there.

Those bins are not allowed to be out on the pavement. Veolia must have given them guidance as to where they are supposed to be placed; isn't there an alleyway between Priory and Worthington St. ?
Enjoy your visit Phil and please do let us know what it is like inside.

It is wrong to run down a place which you have not been in even,It toke some time geting use to it from the outside, but it is bright and clean, better than it was when it was not in use.I am not a drinking man so I will not be using it unless we have a soft drink when out shoping.I hope they make ago of it and still there in five years time. We only have to look at Astor school painted yellow, but still avery good school, and the other pub in the town which is red,so why are you picking this one out.I do not think we need to keep seeing all the photos each day of it,as for the bins, who said that they will be there all the time,

Well said Vic. Blimey people are quick to moan about the state of Dover and the empty businesses. So its bright - who cares. Surely a nice painted building is better than one with flaking paintwork. Its what goes on inside that matters and with the amount of pubs closing its nice to see one being re opened. I wish them all the luck. Have any of you actually been in?????

Indeed Mr David B,Think if all the shops and food outlets done the sameDover would look good again and the public would come to Dover in their 100s just to see it,and just at the cost of a few bob in paint.

The time has come, I've girded up my loins, donned my hard hat and am about to make the trip into the GL, after I've been to the market! Watch this space after lunch!

So, here I am, back home and still vertical! The things I do..... Well, the Lion is alive and well, I was greeting by a very freindly and welcoming young lady called Sarah, who is one of the two managers, the other being Kelly who was not on duty. The bar area was well stocked, the room was clean and fresh and the old sticky carpet has been replaced with a polished wooden floor. The loos have been updated and are a great inprovement. Some old plaques from the earlier days are to be replaced soon, which is a nice touch. No food is planned except maybe 'buffet style' bar bits on a Sunday and maybe good simple filled rolls. Three handpumps await thier real ale, Doombar is to become the standard along with Green King IPA, the 3rd pump reserved for guest/stronger ales, my Keg cider was £3.40 which is par for the course. Live music is on it's way, and the jukebox was background only. The Winkle Club may well reappear, but lots of work to do on that before it can open, watch this space! Some bar furnture is yet to arrive but it's early days and all in all the GL is looking good. Sarah has already opened a Facebook page and she is interested in joining the forum as a means of keeping us in touch, good thinking!
So, the verdict? Give it a go, I was pleased with what I found and, while not 'posh' I think the Lion is alive and well with the promise of more to come, go on, give it a go, you know you want too!

Well done Phil, we counted you in and are happy to count you out again.
I pay £2.30 for my pint of Guinness, but then again I am not by the sea.

sounds very cheap tom is it from a wetherspoons pub?

No, not this time Howard. Just an ordinary pub, albeit an example of extended happy-hour pricing, the price leaps up to £2,60 at other times and rises still further if there is sport on the TV. The pub gets no nearer the sea though.
