Where did you get that Howard, it's not on the DDC website?
Should be a retrospective application after their last two beer festivals!

I couldn't find anything either Ray probably because I was looking at planning rather than licencing applications!! I am on the E mail list for licencing and this stood out as a try on. Put an acceptable one in so that nobody objects then later sneak a big change in. I seem to remember Mr Garstin stopping off there on a hot day for a swift half and was told they only serve drinks with customers dining there. Hardly sounds like a village pub.

That's right, I was told that two locals got banned because they only ever drank and didn't eat! Different in my current local, they keep takeaway menus behind the bar or you bring your own in!.
I'll make sure those who need to know, know.

I think if the landlord had tried to maintain the old fashioned village local he may well be out of business now, just like The Hope. The sad state of affairs is that there is now not enough support for the old school local pub anymore. I'm not aware of ever having an issue with just drinking in there though, when I used to live in Lydden I often popped in just for a drink with no issues.

The old fashioned country pub are very lucky if they are making a living, most have to rely on visiting trade, quality food and/or events.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

The Lydden Bell has got an excellent business model, but it's based on being a restaurant not a pub. Great result of this has been lots of beer drinkers have been going to the Carpenters Arms at Coldred and are helping keep that pub going - don't try it if you only drink lager!
The Hope was run down deliberately so the developer could make loadsamoney selling the large site for housing.
